Yes it is beautiful, but while this celebration is not a Catholic celebration it has it’s origin in the Catholic tradition and a counterpart in the Liturgy of the Hours (also known as the Divine Office).

Actually, the practice has it’s roots in Judaism. The early Church, both East and West, continued the practice of fixed-hour prayer, not really changing much from the Jewish texts. We see the continuation of this throughout the centuries, especially in our monastic communities. Anglicanism has always practiced the Liturgy of the Hours - it is part of our Book of Common Prayer.

Does anyone know of Phyllis Tickle’s series called The Divine Hours? If you want to begin praying them, I would highly recommend these books.

Thank you, CSF, for this recommendation. Compline has always taken my breath away and made me feel like God lived in my heart since I was a young child… Sewanee is my alma mater, but I was not aware of an offering of the Divine Hours when I was there. I will certainly look into it more fully.

Thank you, frizzgrig. I know that both of our traditions are rooted in the same sturdy tree.

Oh Little Sheep, I knew we were soul friends; compline is what settles me into the night and into God’s loving peace. I have prayed it alone and prayed it in community. I have prayed it when a loved one was dying. I once prayed it/sang it in a large gathering of over 500 people and I was in tears.

Two mentions - one is Phyllis Tickle’s Night Offices. I gave you a link earlier to the entire series of Offices. This one volume is for the nighttime hours. Very special to me.

The other is called Prayers at Night’s Approaching by Jim Cotter. Do you know of his work? A poet and liturgist of our era. He is an Anglican priest from the UK and has written prayers and poetry for the church for decades. The Lord’s Prayer from the New Zealand Prayer Book? He wrote it. What a gift he was. Sadly, he died of leukemia just two years ago. We lost a treasure. If you don’t know his work, please do discover it.

A joy to talk of these things with you!

Thank you so much. I ordered Tickle’s book today. I have heard of Cotter, but I have not investigated his poetry in any detail. I will dive into it more deeply. Thank you again for this recommendation.

The first time I experienced Compline, I was about 6-years-old. To this day, I recall it as one of the most profound experiences of my life.

Unlike some small children, the services of my church enthralled me and drew me more deeply into the love and mystery of God. I have no genuine “conversion” story. As a toddler of 4, 5, I experienced the Gospels and Prayers and Hymns I heard at worship as something I had known forever.

Today, I struggle for discipline in my worship, which is perhaps why the Divine Hours video that I posted spoke to me so deeply. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for sharing your experiences and knowledge with me. God bless you on this beautiful evening.
