Dear moderators, this thread kind of died back at the old thread, please leave up!!

Hey everyone!

I’m going to need everyones help on this, so please chip in. I am in a sticky problem. I have a few chaplets that i say, and i love them. After the Holy Rosary though, i want to start a devotion that i say every day. The chaplets i have, arent said every day but selective days. But i want a chaplet that i will say everyday after the Holy Rosary. Now, im being exclusive here and sorry if i am, but i want your help in helping me pick a devotion/chaplet. I LOVE THE SACRED HEART. I have a very beautiful chaplet, in honor of the Sacred Heart,(i will post the prayers). But i dont say the Divine Mercy, as i feel one should take precedence over the other. (Correct me if i’m wrong). I chose the Sacred Heart and i will list why, and i am going to list the differences between the two devotions. It will be your job then, Dear forum readers, to say which would you pick, and why ( the answers dont have to be complicated or long, a few reasons should suffice)

Reasons for the Sacred Heart
  1. It emphasizes the unconditional love Our LORD has for us, with HIS HEART being wounded each time we sin, as HE loves us so much.
(imagine a couple, where the MAN is sooooo on fire with love of the woman, that LITERALLY, his heart is on fire, with pain, and that man would do ANYTHING to have a fraction of that affection returned unto him-this is my analogy of the Sacred Heart)
  1. It is a devotion, more based in reparation, for the indifference, and sometimes even hatred we show to CHRIST, when HE in turn desires our intimate union with HIM
  2. There are many representations, and it is probably the most empahsized image in CHRISTIANITY, and i love how Our LORD points to HIS HEART, Cut and aflame by our ingratitude, yet throbbing with LOVE FOR US
  3. However, it isnt so popular anymore, and im discouraged, as there isnt anyone else i can think of that practices this devotion.
Reasons for choosing the Divine Mercy
  1. It emphasizes the LORDS MERCY, which we are ALL in need of
  2. It is growing VERY, VERY FAST- I think it has replaced the Sacred Heart in terms of popularity
  3. Im scrupulous, so i always need a dose reminder of the LORDS mercy, not just HIS justice.
  4. The image is pretty amazing,
  5. However it is more of contemoprary devotion (correct me if i am wrong), however the Sacred Heart is a more traditional devotion, more common in the beautiful basilicas and old latin churches, whereas the Divine Mercy is pretty new.
Thank you so much for taking the time to respond and may GOD BLESS YOU ALL!!

P.S. here is the link for the Sacred Heart Chaplet prayers

P.s which is better also, for discerning a vocation to the Priesthood?

I like to use the Sacred Heart Chaplet, thinking of it as a personal devotion and I use the Divine Mercy Chaplet as my contribution to praying for the conversion of all sinners. I was praying the S. H. Chaplet recently very regularly, but I have some other Sacred Heart prayers that I use and have been using them lately. I make a point to pray the Divine Mercy Chaplet and the Rosary (because Our Blessed Mother has asked us to) for sure daily. It is hard if you get too many devotions going daily. But, perhaps you could alternate. That could work out very nicely and you wouldn’t have to choose after all, having both.

Boy, I really hope they close this thread.

Did it occur to you how incredibly inappropriate it is to create “devotion VS devotion?” Or that you can instigate some bizarre competitiveness in posters and the thread become an occasion for sin?

If you want to discern a vocation, go see the vocation director of your diocese.

Some minds perceive by comparing similarities. Some by noting differences. Is this really a competition?

Why would you bring this into consideration? Why does it matter how old each prayer is??? Age does not make a prayer more efficacious, it is sincerity and charity of heart that accomplishes that.

Can’t people just choose whichever they want to follow for whatever reason and just do it? Prayer is prayer.

Can one separate water from rain?

Meditate on that which you feel brings you nearer to your God this all that Christ would ask.:highprayer:

Once upon a time the Rosary was “pretty new.” So that’s not necessarily a bad thing.

Hey now! the Luminous Mysteries are pretty new!🙂

It’s all good! We all have special devotions for special circumstances - yes?

Could you say them on alternating days?
I understand what you mean by the difference between mercy in one and justice in the other. This way, you could have a balanced devotion.

Also, if you read into it, I found an interesting article (somewhere long forgotten I’m afraid) that showed how the Divine Mercy revelations only fulfilled the Sacred Heart revelations, so they are actually the same devotion. Guess it just depends which picture you like better! I like the Sacred Heart as a statue and the Divine Mercy as a picture personally! 👍

Thanks everyone, I wasnt trying to creating ANY competition between devotions, my brain justed wanted to weigh it all out, and it happens best, with comparison. Both ARE VERY beautiful devotions, and that is why i am torn between trying to choose one of the two

They are both beautiful one is not better than the other.
I think pray to God to show you which one is more suited to you.
Or pray them both 😃

Devotion to God is devotion to God it is not WHICH one it is WHAT is in your heart. Personally I read about the Divine Mercy story before becoming Catholic officially. I then decided to do the novena since it was something I had never done before. I literally sat with the book infront of me and read the words, I did get on my knees but when you are reading a prayer out of a book, I find it hard to to make my prayer very ( what I would consider) devout or at least they don’t feel that way BUT the whole things is now part of my conversion story, it is what God used in me that mattered.

Since becoming Catholic as I have read more and delved into the faith head first , I discovered the Sacred Heart , I tried to do the 9 first Saturdays thing but on the 9th I was foiled. I will have to try again when my life is less controlled by outside forces…it doesn’t matter God knows what is in my heart, what matters is my faith and devotion to Him.

Personally when I started to read about the Sacred Heart I felt that the Divine Mercy was simply a different way of putting the same truth, so to the OP I say if you feel you MUST do one or the other then either do whichever ‘speaks’ to you or are more comfortable with or ask God to show you…

Well then, say both. It only takes an extra 10-15 min.

The Holy Spirit is who prays within us and teaches us to pray. Therefore, you should pray to Him for guidance.
