Divine Mercy Sunday mass

Next Sunday will be Divine Mercy Sunday and at my church they will be praying the Divine Mercy chaplet at 3pm followed by a 3:30pm mass. I was wondering whether I would be fulfilling my Sunday obligation in going to mass at 3:30pm instead of my usual 10:30 am or 12 noon mass.

I am sorry if this question is stupid but since I am aware that there are Saturday vigil masses for those who can’t make Sunday morning mass I was wondering if mass later in the afternoon at 3:30pm on a Sunday would not be considered as fulfilling my Sunday obligation? I know that it is at sundown when the next day begins but I want to make sure. (I COULD attend both noon mass and 3:30pm mass but sometimes I can be spiritually lazy…which I hate! )

Yes it will fulfill your obligation. Mass at any time on Sunday will. My Newman center has Mass at 6 and 7pm on Sundays.

Rest assured, Mass at any time between 4pm (in most countries) on Saturday and midnight on Sunday will fulfil your Sunday obligation. You’d know that if you lived in my diocese, where we have many afternoon Sunday Masses and even 8PM and 10.30pm Sunday evening Masses. All perfectly valid for fulfilling the Sunday obligation.

Think about it - why call the 3.30 pm Mass ‘Divine Mercy SUNDAY’ Mass if it was in fact a Monday mass? Why not have it the day before if 3.30pm Sunday would in fact make it a different day entirely?

Of all the days of the week, ONLY Sundays, solemn feasts and HDOs begin at sundown the day before, they are exceptions. But they go right through to midnight of the day itself.

Ordinary days (those which are neither Sundays, feasts or HDOs) go as a rule from midnight to midnight.

Due to the special request of Our Lord to recite the chaplet and unite with His sufferings at 3:00 p.m., the OP mentioned that they would recite the chaplet at that time, and follow it with a mass. Some parishes have the luxury of sufficient priests to enable them to celebrate the feast at that time of day, whereas the majority of us will simply celebrate it during our regular mass schedules.

If the 3:30 mass you want to attend has the same readings as Sunday, it is the vigil mass. If not, then I doubt it fulfills your Sunday obligation. Call the church and ask, I’m sure they’ll be happy to tell you.

Umm … it’s a Sunday Mass (read the OP again). If it’s a Sunday Mass and has the same readings as the other Sunday Masses, then it is a Sunday Mass and fulfils the obligation.

“Can. 1248 §1. A person who assists at a Mass celebrated anywhere in a Catholic rite either on the feast day itself or in the evening of the preceding day satisfies the obligation of participating in the Mass.” (my emphasis).

Certainly TLMs and Eastern Liturgies tend to have different readings from NO on Sundays anyway, so if they fulfil the obligation then this should too.

Good to know somebody likes me and my sense of humor! I often get looks from others in real life when it comes to my jokes that make it appear as if I have suddenly grown 2 extra heads… As to others liking me in real life…well, I will leave it at “no comment” lol

Spiritual laughter therapy has been much under-rated… Up with laughter down with the frown.

Oh many a time i hear my oldest saying to her younger sister, “oh that’s just mommy talking to the computer again!”

So i Looove the idea of labeling it spiritual laughter therepy!

I am right up there for the dry warped sense of humor. How can one actually face the day without it and not fall to their knees.
It indeed is the counterpart to life and prayer i need daily.
