Is the plenary indulgence of Divine Mercy Sunday obtainable during the Saturday Mass prior to Sunday?

The Vigil Mass fulfills the Sunday obligation for Divine Mercy Sunday, so you are eligible for the special graces Jesus promised so long as you recieve communion in a State of grace & fulfill the other requirements.

If you are talking about the special graces promised by Jesus for Divine Mercy Sunday (which is not the same as a plenary indulgence, which is established by the Church, not by Jesus):

You can get these graces by attending the Saturday vigil Mass that meets the Sunday obligation.

If you are talking about the plenary indulgence offered by the Church for Divine Mercy Sunday:

you must do the indulgenced work on the Sunday. The indulgenced work would be either
a) participating in a Divine Mercy devotion in a church, OR

b) alternatively reciting the Our Father, the Creed, and “Merciful Jesus, I Trust in You” in front of the Blessed Sacrament (unless you are prevented from getting to church due to disaster, war, serious illness of yourself or someone you’re caring for, or being a sailor at sea, in which case you can say the prayers in front of an image of Our Merciful Lord Jesus where you are).

You would also need to fulfill the other conditions for the plenary: Holy Communion on the Sunday or within a few days, prayers for the Holy Father’s intentions on the Sunday or within a few days, Confession within 20 days, be in a state of grace on Divine Mercy Sunday when you do the work, and have no attachment to sin.

Remember to gaze on the painting of Jesus in reverence and do works of Mercy for the indulgence that Jesus offers. As well as communion and confession

So I have been saying the Divine Mercy Novena. What exactly do I need to do on Divine Mercy Sunday? I am confused.

“The plenary indulgence is granted under the usual conditions (sacramental confession, Eucharistic communion and prayer for the intentions of Supreme Pontiff) to the faithful who, on the Second Sunday of Easter or Divine Mercy Sunday, in any church or chapel, in a spirit that is completely detached from the affection for a sin, even a venial sin, take part in the prayers and devotions held in honor of Divine Mercy, or who, in the presence of the Blessed Sacrament exposed or reserved in the tabernacle, recite the Our Father and the Creed, adding a devout prayer to the merciful Lord Jesus (e.g. Merciful Jesus, I trust in you!).”

So to simplify, on Sunday you need to:
  • Have confessed your sins at least 20 days prior to Divine Mercy Sunday
  • Be in a state of grace
  • Receive the Eucharist
  • In the presence of the Eucharist, either:
    • Take part in prayers held in honor of Divine Mercy
    • Say the Our Father, Creed, and a devout prayer to Jesus

There are two seperate indulgences. One is granted as per the Holy See. The other is granted directly by Jesus.

Jesus requests
Acts of Mercy
Communion
Confession
Venerating his painting

According to St Faustina, Christ promised that on the Feast of Mercy, “the soul that will go to confession and receive Holy Communion shall obtain complete forgiveness of sins and punishment”.

On 13 June 2002 Pope John Paul II established that Divine Mercy Sunday be enriched by a plenary indulgence, to ensure that the faithful would observe this day with intense devotion.

To quote Our Lord’s words to St Faustina: “I desire that the feast of Mercy be a refuge and shelter for all souls, and especially for poor sinners. On that day the very depths of My tender mercy are open. I pour out a whole ocean of graces upon those souls who approach the fount of My mercy. On that day all the divine floodgates through which graces flow are opened. Let no soul fear to draw near to Me, even though its sins be as scarlet. My mercy is so great that no mind, be it of man or of angel, will be able to fathom it throughout eternity. The Feast of Mercy emerged from My very depths of tenderness. It is My desire that it be solemnly celebrated on the first Sunday after Easter. Mankind will not have peace until it turns to the Fount of My Mercy.”

Oops forgot the link. Google Divine Mercy Sunday and read what Jesus said to St. Faustina

Hmmm, guess I miss out on that this year. Perhaps next year, if I can finally join.

I know it’s semantics, but keep in mind the plenary indulgence is different from the special graces as Rose mentioned (though definitely a great add). The indulgence is offered by the Church (and only one plenary indulgence can be obtained per day), while the graces were offered by Jesus Himself in the vision to St. Faustina. So there is one plenary indulgence available on Divine Mercy Sunday, as well as special graces – a wonderfully holy day indeed!

And if you are not yet full catholic , still go along, participate in Mass as much as you can, and allow those Graces of Jesus to reach you .

I’m also praying the Devine Mercy but I don’t think I can receive the plenary indulgence on sunday because I was married at a Protestant Church. So I can’t recieve communion I hope next year I can
😥

Was supposed to be confirmed at Easter Vigil. Due to the nature of my job, and what it entails, there were conflicts that came up that I really can’t discuss. Discussion with the priest and bishop resulted in the conclusion that Easter Vigil wasn’t the appropriate setting/timing, and that’s where we wound up. Bishop had suggested a private confirmation out of the public eye, on Saturday, but I didn’t feel that such was appropriate.

Basically, you could call it taking one for the team. Will likely be months before I could join without conflict issues. All of the lead up, RCIA, etc., and just bad timing. Was rather awkward at Monday’s Mass when I ran into people expecting to see me confirmed on Saturday.

SantaMaria, Seeksadvice, both of you will be in my night prayer tonight. While the indulgence may not be available, keep praying the Novena, or start it if you haven’t already! Jesus promised, “By this Novena (of Chaplets), I will grant every possible grace to souls.” And of course, as Rose mentioned, go to Mass on Sunday and participate to the fullest extent that you can – Jesus never turns us away from Him.

Yes I’ve spoken to the priest and he will help us to get our marriage recognised by the Church and also to baptise our babies

As Rose and others said, there are two things you can do for Divine Mercy Sunday.

The special graces from Jesus are not an “indulgence”, technically. Websites and other people keep calling them an “indulgence”. Actually, an “indulgence” is a way to reduce temporal punishment that is provided by the Church under its binding and loosing authority. So if grace and mercy is coming straight from Jesus, it’s not coming from the Church and is not under the church authority, and is not an “indulgence”.

Here is more on the difference:

(1) To get the special graces from Jesus:
  • go to confession during a reasonable time prior to Divine Mercy Sunday (I understand that even going during Holy Week is sufficient, provided you stay in the state of grace)
  • be in a state of grace
  • receive Holy Communion on Sunday, or at the Saturday vigil Mass for Sunday, with trust in Jesus’ Divine Mercy.
Note that this special grace is just for you. You can’t give it away to a poor soul in purgatory. You can of course pray for the poor soul in Purgatory or offer your Mass/ Communion for them but that’s not the same as giving them the grace from Jesus.

(2) To get a Plenary Indulgence (provided by the Church, not by Jesus) for Divine Mercy Sunday, you do the things Jubilant said.
You can use the same confession (provided it’s within 20 days and you stay in the state of grace) as in (1).
You can also use the same Holy Communion as in (1).

Note however that the work (participating in the Divine Mercy service or saying the prayers as explained by Jubilant) needs to be done ON THE SUNDAY, not at the Saturday vigil.

Some of the churches in my area have special Sunday prayer services for Divine Mercy, so people who went to Saturday Mass can come to the Sunday prayer service in the afternoon for their Divine Mercy devotions. Maybe you can find a prayer service in your area.

This indulgence can be given to a soul in purgatory - and frankly, if you’re receiving Jesus’ special graces already, it makes sense to give the indulgence to a soul because you’re not going to need it having gotten the grace from Jesus.

I hope this helps
