The Sunday after Easter Sunday is Divine Mercy Sunday.
This is a request by Jesus to St Faustina, in a Private Revelation, approved by the Vatican.

In my state , over 200 Churches will be celebrating Mass and having Confession on Divine Mercy Sunday. My Cathedral is one of these.

On this day, Jesus said to St Faustina He would open up His Mercy to all, everyone. All we need do is ask.
Go to Mass, go to Confession. And have the Image of Divine Mercy Jesus blessed publically.

I am not sure where to put this thread but want to let people know of this, in the lead up to the day. Jesus has asked for a Novena, starting Good Friday and for us to prepare well for this day.

It is a great day to pray for conversion of souls, confess and seek forgiveness of sin, even after decades of no confession, and of basking in God’s Glory and Mercy.

I will post more later, from the fliers about this day. In my Cathedral a very newly ordained young Priest is conducting this activity. He will have 3 Priests helping in the Confessionals.

Thanks for letting me know. I heard about Divine Mercy Sunday but didn’t know what it entailed. Now, I will get a booklet on it.

I would check in your area to see if any parish/es observe/s the feast.

There is usually one parish in my area that does every year.

My parish will have Masses as usual for Divine Mercy Sunday. After the last morning Mass is completed on Divine Mercy Sunday itself, we will recite the Divine Mercy Chaplet with Adoration, Exposition then Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament. Our priest plans to be present earlier on Saturday afternoon of the Divine Mercy weekend to hear additional confessions also.

I am familiar with Divine Mercy Sunday and have commemorated it for many years (Novena, chaplet, and private veneration of the image).

My questions concern the special Masses on Divine Mercy Sunday. Is it necessary to attend these special observances to gain the various graces and indulgences? Our parish doesn’t have them (but does have a large Divine Mercy image that is venerated) but a neighboring parish does and it is very crowded. It is also much later in the day than usual.

Is it sufficient to attend any Sunday Mass (reverently, of course)? Or does it have to be specifically a “Divine Mercy Mass”?

Thanks and God bless,

There is no actual “Divine Mercy Mass.” The Mass is always of the Sunday, regardless of whether or not Divine Mercy is observed. The priest may or may not speak about Divine Mercy in his homily. Observance of the devotion may or may not take place at a particular church, but the indulgence is always available to those who avail themselves of it. And confession does not have to be on the day itself (though I personally prefer to do so); it may be on the days following.

Today,

Good Friday.

The day to start the Divine Mercy Novena.
Does anyone need a link to it?
I am hesitant to post in the Prayer forum as the Novena itself will have other prayer posts added to it.

The Sacrament of Confession anytime from now if not able to do this closer to the day.

The Sunday after Easter is now called Divine Mercy Sunday. If your church chooses to do the devotions before or after is an option but not required. You can simply go to the normal Sunday Liturgy or go to the special one at the neighboring parish - both will fulfill your Sunday obligations.

Here is a link to additional details:

What “special” Mass?
Some churches choose to have the Mass for 2nd Sunday of Easter now called Divine Mercy Sunday with the Divine Mercy Devotions/Chaplet etc to take place either before or after Mass. The Divine Mercy Devotions/Chaplet part is optional.

Sorry if this isn’t the most appropriate forum.

I’ve been praying the Divine Mercy Chaplet and doing spiritual and corporal works of mercy over the last week and one of the “requirements” for the plenary indulgence is to go to mass on Divine Mercy Sunday and go to confession either 14 days before or after or on DMS.

My two questions are:

First question: Is the confession piece exactly prescriptive, meaning that the confession can ONLY be done 14 days before or after or on DMS, or is it meant to be a range of 14 days prior all the way through 14 days after and could be done on any of those days?

Second question: Our church is offering confessions from 2-4, then mass at 4, then adoration and veneration after mass. Does this mass count as my Sunday obligation too, or do I need to go to a Saturday vigil or Sunday morning mass too?

Thanks!!!

Hi JoeFreedom.

First there are two seperate indulgences if you like.

The First is granted directly by Jesus.

The Second granted by the Pope.

For the Indulgence granted by Jesus

Requirements are
  1. Venerate a picture of the painting of Divine Mercy Jesus.
  2. Confession
  3. Communion on Divine Mercy Sunday in a state of Grace ( no sins un absolved).
  4. Sincere repentance
  5. Complete Trust in Jesus
  6. Works of Mercy.
Jesus promises to forgive all our Sins and punishment if we ask on Sunday and comply with His requirements.

The Pope has granted a Plenary (or Partial) Indulgence also.
  1. Confession
  2. Communion in a State of Grace
  3. Pray for the Intentions of the Pope, and prayers for the Pope.
I don’t know about the 14 day confession time window. The usual is within 7-8 days for the Plenary Indulgence ?
But this is crucial
I know that you must take Communion in a State of Grace. On the Day.

My Cathedral is doing Confessions with 3 Priests ( anticipation of busy lines!)
Then Chaplet of Divine Mercy
Then Mass.

This Mass counts as Sunday Mass. and we have a very new, young Priest running all this. He has the help of the retired Bishop.

For me, and Australia, Divine Mercy Sunday starts in about 4- 6 hours.
