How does one recite the necessary prayers “in a spirit completely detached from any affection for sin, even venial”? It seems if one could do this, one would have to be pretty holy already. I want to gain the indulgence for a loved one, but I don’t think I can do this.

Also, if the Church can give these out at will, why would they make it so hard? Wouldn’t they want as many people as possible to get out of Purgatory?

I need to look it up, but I understand that to gain a plenary indulgence you need to be disposed as you describe.

If one isn’t disposed as you describe, but does all the penances necessary, a partial indulgence may be received.

For the purposes of requesting a plenary indulgence I usually stay and perform the indulgenced act immediately after mass, as any venial sin will have been forgiven by receiving the Eucharist.In terms of Divine Mercy Sunday, the plenary indulgence is for you, and you are only required to attend confession, mass and communion to obtain it.

The whole purpose of these indulgences is for us to become saints. Practice makes perfect. The Church does not give us plenty of opportunities to release people from purgatory, the Church gives us plenty of opportunities to increase our holiness by trying to help the souls of purgatory. In truth, those souls are already heaven bound but we are not and we are the ones that have everything to gain from working to accept indulgences.

You must also have detachment from sin, and the indulgence can be for the souls in purgatory too.

But since those souls are already heaven-bound, what would be the harm in granting them indulgences? Why make them spend unnecessary time there?

If our heart is only selfish about our own journey to heaven, then we are not in the state of love for our neighbor (those in purgatory are still in need of our love, and taking away part of their time for purification and helping to get them to heaven earlier is an act of love.) We should be just as concerned with every other persons journey to heaven as we are for our own. likely even more so.

Can we gain it for souls in Purgatory and ourselves?
Or just either or?

This is my very first time doing the Novena for Divine Mercy Sunday.

If our heart is only selfish about our own journey to heaven, then we are not in the state of love for our neighbor (those in purgatory are still in need of our love, and taking away part of their time for purification and helping to get them to heaven earlier is an act of love.) We should be just as concerned with every other persons journey to heaven as we are for our own. likely even more so.

I wish I could just give my portion to the person I’m thinking of, but the one you get for yourself is the easy one on Divine Mercy Sunday. The hardest one to get is the plenary indulgence from the Church that you can actually give away- I don’t see myself being able to be properly disposed for this one.
