I was just wondering how other Catholics feel about the novena of the Divine Mercy pamphlets -printed with ecclesiastical approbation - changing the words of Jesus regarding Day 5 (Jesus says “heretics and schismatics,” the pamphlet says “those who have separated from My Church”). Reasoning: saying the words schismatic and heretic"" isn’t in line with the current thinking of the Church.

Someone brought a box of them in to our church…I should’ve pulled one to see who was printing it.

I have a pamphlet that has His actual words. It’s identical to the one I mentioned, except for those specific words of the fifth day. If there are still copies at the church tomorrow I’ll bring one home for specifics on it…sort of shocked me when I first read it a couple years ago. What is going on?!

You may want to see who the publiser of the pamphlet is to verify if it is an official publication. If it is or is not, you may want to try and contact the publisher directly or contact the Marian Association and see if they can shed some light. God BLess.

The note on EWTN from the Novena published by the Congregation of Marians of the Immaculate Conception says this:

*Our Lord’s original words here were “heretics and schismatics,” since He spoke to Saint Faustina within the context of her times. As of the Second Vatican Council, Church authorities have seen fit not to use those designations in accordance with the explanation given in the Council’s Decree on Ecumenism (n.3). Every pope since the Council has reaffirmed that usage. Saint Faustina herself, her heart always in harmony with the mind of the Church, most certainly would have agreed. When at one time, because of the decisions of her superiors and father confessor, she was not able to execute Our Lord’s inspirations and orders, she declared: “I will follow Your will insofar as You will permit me to do so through Your representative. O my Jesus " I give priority to the voice of the Church over the voice with which You speak to me” (497). The Lord confirmed her action and praised her for it.

Yes, the Novena booklet that I had way back when gave this information.

As the Church still uses the words “heretic” and “schismatic” how can they change the words of Jesus to fit the mentality that they themselves do not necessarily hold?

Just out of curiosity, what is your personal opinion of this? (If you don’t mind my asking?)

Changing the words of Jesus you don’t find repugnant? Is the actual Diary of St. Faustina next going to be re-written? Where does it stop?!

I’d prefer that they use the original words wherever possible. I’m not sure why what they say now is “less offensive” since it means the same thing anyway. I guess I don’t have a problem with the change, but I don’t really see the point. Then again, it’s not my decision either way.
