Actually there are 7 hours in the current Liturgy of the Hours as Daytime prayer is broken up into Midmorning, Midday, and Midafternoon (which corresponds to Terce, Sext, and None). As was posted earlier, only Prime was eliminated. The Office of Reading corresponds with Matins.

I have played around with a couple of other brevieries but never long enough to really get to know how to use them.

I pray the Liturgy of the Hours because that is what I have to pray. Pray Morning (Lauds) and Evening (Vespers) in community and do one of the Daytime (Terce, Sext, None) and the Office of Readings (Matins) privately with separate books (Daytime Prayer and Office of Reading books).

I prayed the “Matutinum” on the train today. It took a lot more concentration than my Liturgy of the hours and it was a lot longer, but still a good experience.

I am a Traditional Catholic Benedictine Nun. Did you get the answers that you wanted? I use “The Monastic Diurnal or The Day Hours of the Monastic Breviary” 1955 version. There is a 1945 version also.
