Is there a reason why today’s feast has special antiphons? Most of the Virgin Saints offices seem to use the typical antiphons for Matins and Lauds, and I’m curious why today’s was different. thanks!
Tradition. If, traditionally, proper antiphons existed for a saint, they’re used (sometimes ad libitum). If not, then the ferial ones are used. Also many feasts were downgraded to memorials in the post-Vatican II reforms. Some of those kept their traditional antiphons for Lauds and Vespers, but the rest of the Office (Office of Readings, mid-day) are prayed as ordinary memorials (Readings) or the day (mid-day).
St Cecilia is the same in the 1962 breviary (third class Feast with dedicated antiphons and readings).
St Martin (feast day 11th November) is the same as well.
