I have two questions that I feel are very basic but any creative (name removed by moderator)ut is appreciated.

I am going on a 2 week long camping trip with about 11 other people, some of whom are not Catholic. I want to take my Breviary along with me on the trip. However this is one of those minimalist hiking trips where you bring as little as possible. “Every ounce counts”.I know I would fight to have this, but I am worried first of all about my Breviary getting damaged by water or dirt. Any tips from keeping this from happening?

Second question: What is the best way to suggest my group pray with me at least one of the hours? How can I describe that this isn’t just a Catholic Priest thing, not even just a Catholic thing, but for everybody (I believe everybody going is some form of Christian)…By the way I am apart of the laity currently.

This is not life or death matter, but any kind of comment, especially from someone who’s done this before, is greatly appreciated

Thanks and have a blessed day!👍

Shorter Christian Prayer might be an option --smaller and lighter than either the one-volume Christian Prayer or the appropriate volume of the four-volume set. Or, if you’ll be taking your phone with you, the iBreviary app might be good. I think there’s an option to download multiple days if you’ll be someplace without cell service.

I’ve invited people to pray with me. Of course it’s easier if they have the prayers in hand. I don’t know how you’d share the book with several people at once.

I’ve seen some nice zip-up breviary covers, here’s an example:

You can also do what I do in similar circumstances, improve weatherproofing with a ziplock bag. It’s what I use for my iPhone on hikes and bike rides. Concidentally we will also be hiking ourselves on holidays very soon (in Scotland) but it will be day walks, so likely I won’t carry my breviary on the walks.

As for your friends, assuming they’re Christians, perhaps try saying “would you like to pray the Bible with me?” or “would you like to pray some biblical prayers with me?”. When they realize that the biggest chunk of the LOTH is from the Bible (psalms and Bible verses), you may at the same time help dispel the myth that Catholics never read the Bible 😉

Our priest manages to take all his Mass stuff along and breviary when he goes on his hiking camping trips in the mountains. I challenge you to bring your breviary with you. A large ziploc bag will keep it dry.

  1. I have Shorter Christian Prayer as a backup for a week or longer trips. I have an app on my iPhone/iPad called “iBreviary” that can hold 7 days of LOTH. Both have super durable cases and I will be getting a waterproof case soon. I do mainly Morning and Evening Prayer around 6-7 AM and 5-6 PM respectively. I highly recommend this form of prayer.
  2. If you know these people, I suggest just bringing it up as a friendly activity whilst there’s no other camping activity to do. If you don’t know these people, bond over a meal with them (or maybe 1 or 2 people) and then ask afterwards. If anything, it doesn’t hurt to ask anyone to pray 🙂 I think sometimes people are afraid to break the ice and just asking the question really opens up the floodgates.
Have fun and God bless 🙂

If you have a smart phone, you can use the Breviary app. Other than that, you could perhaps try for the Angelus or the Rosary. Maybe the Divine Mercy Chapet would be more comfortable to non-Catholics. Or, if you really don’t want to bring anything and really want to pray with everyone, you can just gather together and pray.

There are short versions of prayer out there that you could bring instead. You could also simply say memorized prayers, rosaries and read a bit of scripture daily.

As far as keeping things clean and dry: Try DOUBLE zip lock bags in addition to whatever you are using to carry stuff in.

And just a question: Did you know you can use an orange to start a fire? Just a survivors tip. Check it out online. 👍

In addition to the Shorter Christian Prayer book; there is also the Magnificat. This book has the Morning, Evening & Night Prayers in addition to the Mass of the day. It’s also pocket size.

Thanks everybody and I’ll try the ziplock idea. As for everybody praying together, wish me luck! I’ll bring it up but if not, at least I’ll have it:)

And the orange peel trick may come in handy. Also steel wool and a large D battery can start a fire. Boy scout tip:)

Thank you all
