Divine office overlap?

Why Is there an overlap in the divine office volumes?
Volume I is advent, christmas tide and weeks 1-9
Volume III is weeks 6-34

Isn’t it just a big waste of paper to print the proper readings and antiphons twice for 4 weeks?
 
I was really confused until I saw that you live in England. 🙂 The 4-volume version we use in the U.S. doesn’t have that overlap.

The earliest we can pick Ordinary Time back up again is week 6. So the reprinting is very likely so you don’t have to switch between volumes a few weeks after Pentecost.

The 4-volume French version I use in Canada does.

For the OP, it’s easy to figure out: theoretically, OT after Epiphany can run to a max of 9 weeks, and OT after Pentecost can start as early as week 6. For those of us who travel, having to lug around two breviaries over a volume change is a pain, best to keep those times to a minimum.

The Latin version has a different organization though:

Vol 1: Advent and Christmas season
Vol 2: Lent and Easter
Vol 3: OT weeks 1-17
Vol 4: OT weeks 17-34

Well that is what I was thinking (about the whole weeks leading up to Lent then the week numbering starting again from Pentecost)

Another question though, has anyone noticed that the last week of ordinary time before lent is 6 whereas after pentecost, ordinary time starts again with week 8. I’ve also noticed that this applies (the apparent missing of weeks) in other years. why?

The last week of Ordinary Time is always 34. Some years one gets skipped, due to how Easter (and related liturgical events) fall in relation to Ordinary Time.

It doesn’t always end at 6 and doesn’t always resume at 8. The last Sunday in OT before Lent this year is week 8. OT resumes on Monday after Pentecost, at week 10. Where it ends, and where it resumes, depends on when Easter falls in any particular year.

I think what he/she meant was that there is often a skipped week between the last OT week before Ash Wednesday and the Monday after Pentecost.
I wonder if it can even depend of the years where we have 53 Sundays Do we “use all the OT weeks” then?
 
Just so you know, there is a divine office (LOTH) thread on Feb. 19 that is for any questions or comments.
