I am confused, what is the difference between “Divine Office” and “Liturgy of the Hours”? To the uninformed, it seems the terms are used interchangeably.

Thanks!

Divine Office and Liturgy of the Hours are the same thing. Sometimes you will also hear it referred to as the breviary.

God Bless,
Matt

“DIVINE OFFICE … The older name for the liturgy of the hours.”

(From Liturgical Literacy by Dennis Smolarski, Paulist Press, 1990, ISBN 0-8091-3137-4, page 96).

Don’t be confused my friend…they are one in the same…All of the following terms are just different words for the same thing:

Liturgy of The Hours
The Hours
Divine Office
Breviary
Book of Christian Prayer( Condensed 1 Vol Version)
Breviarium Romanum

Hope this helps

If book titles are to be considered, “The Liturgy of the Hours” is the 4-volume title for the Liturgy of the Hours in the US and other countries. “The Divine Office” is the title of the 3-volume set for use in the UK and other countries. Both are translations of the Liturgy of the Hours or Divine Office.

To be precise: Both are translations of *Liturgia Horarum *(which, even if you don’t know Latin, you might guess means “Liturgy of the Hours”)

Just like the Mass, the Liturgy of the hours has been reformed since Vatican II, however since then, there has been an emphasis on the laity also praying it either alone or with religious communities.

Breviary is to the Divine Office as Missal is to the Holy Mass.

The breviary is actually the book(s) that include the texts to the Liturgy of the Hours.
