Hello, I feel I am being strongly called to the Catholic Church. I’m not sure why but there is a yearning in my heart. I have been reading everything I can find on the net on this subject and feel I may have a problem. I have been married once to my current wife. My wife on the other hand was divorced in the late 70’s after her husband of less than a year abandoned her with another woman. Is this situation a roadblock to our becoming Catholics?

Difficult to give a 100% answer without discussing it with either your priest or a canon lawyer - your Bishop’s office should be able to provide you with a contact for one. There are lots of individual factors about your wife’s first marriage that would need to be considered to determine whether it is still valid or whether it can be annulled.

You’d need to discuss the possibility of either an annulment (if ex-hubby is contactable and willing to help) or perhaps radical sanation if he isn’t.

Your wife’s previous marriage is an impediment.

This would mean before you could become Catholic your wife’s first marriage would have to be examined for validity. The process, timeframe, and outcome depend on many factors that should be discussed with a priest.

You should continue to inquire into the Catholic faith, and should talk with a priest about the details. He will guide you.

Thanks for the replies. I sent an email explaining our situation to the Priest at St. Gabriels and asked if we could come speak with him yesterday. Waiting for reply.
