I was talking to my husband today and mentioned that the Catholic Church was the largest in the world.

He told me that that was not true. That part sounded more believable…

But then he said the reason why the Catholic Church isn’t the largest is because of its division. He said that in the recent census their were several Catholic Churches and not just one.

Is this true? I was guessing that the ‘several tyes’ were more referring to local customs and where the church is in the world… or is there really division?.

Islam the largest? Wow! Who’d have thought. I guess you learn something new every day. 🙂

But I am still curious as to why he thought that there were several churches w/ the catholic name. I tried to explain that even if there were several bla bla bla catholic churches, that those churches would only be Catholic in name, that they would not be the church divided, because they aren’t true catholic. But he seemed to want to argue my point… oh well.

One of the reasons for the growth of Islam is that its followers have babies! Seriously, I read an article a couple years back that Muhammad is the most popular name of a baby boy in…Oslo! And one of the most popular in Britain

Islam has denominations just like Protestantism. If all of Islam is to be counted, then all of Christianity should be counted and then the numbers show that Christians out number Muslims 2:1.

Good point, Volodymyr! My husband always points that out to me! He studies Farsi, so he’s all into learning about Islam, the culture, the people, etc.

Yet, Catholicism a few years back used to have more followers than Islam, so the growth of the latter should be noted, in my opinion.

Number of Christians in the world: approximately 2.3 billion
Number of Muslims in the world: approximately 1.3 billion

Number of Roman Catholics in the world: approximately 1.130 billion
Number of Sunni Muslims (largest group of Muslims): approximately 1.105 billion

Pax Vobiscum,
Zach

As far as the “several types of Catholic Churches”, he may be referring to:

Eastern Catholic Churches, which are Catholic in the sense that they are in communion with Rome
or
Old Catholic (by Utretch (sp?)
Independent Old Catholic Church (or another breakaway sect)
Sedevacant sects
or
SSPX (however people want to characterize them fine. For me, until they are regularized, they shouldn’t be counted in the census. Let’s just spare the arguments for this thread)

So it really depends on you definition of “Catholic”.

Chris
