As a former Protestant, I was shocked by this news today. I know from my Baptist days that divorce was becoming more and more accepted in Protestant circles but this latest headline disgusts me and baffles me. Very sad that Robertson is able to mislead possibly millions of viewers on the sanctity of marriage.

My father had Alzheimer’s, my sisters and I took a little different approach, we were thinking about and did bring the idea of divorcing dad to our mother. The thing about Catholics is, if they got a civil divorce, in their hearts and in the eyes of God and His Church they are still married. That was in our thinking when we talked to mom. The reason for this was to protect her financially, we would try to get an 80/20 split of assets so that the expense of the care he would need wouldn’t make her destitute. Nothing would change in their lives, dad would remain with her, well with us.
I know that isn’t the reason stated for the divorce Robertson was talking about, he was trying to free them to be married again.
Mom couldn’t do it, and we all understood. We made the best of a bad situation. He lived for a long time with the decease.
