Divorce-posted on Meet and Greet!

I posted this a.m. but no one has commented so I thought maybe a different forum would help!
Just joined. I am Catholic but not practicing. It has been about three years since I went to confession. Since then, I divorced my wife last summer. We were not married by a priest. We were actually married by a Mormon Bishop 21 years previous. She cheated on me several times in 2009. She didn’t want to give up contact with her “boyfriend” so I felt that I had to divorce her. I have never been a faithful Catholic like I wish I had been. It didn’t dawn on me, since I have not been faithful since becoming RC in 1999, that the divorce was not approved by the church. Actually, until recently, I haven’t even given the church another thought or even felt that I would ever return. The news media recently has made me think more about the church and so, having considered it, I have just given thought to my divorce actions. Besides going to a priest, what should I do to return to the church and be allowed communion? Just found this website and thought I would give it a go at asking members here. Thank you, John.

Welcome! You should call your parish office and make an appointment to see a priest as soon as posible. He will be the most help to you and your situation. The Church does not frown on divorce as much as She has a problem with remarriage. The priest will be able to advise you on where to go from here.

Your first step it to do thorough examination of your conscience and make a good confession. Then you need to make an appointment with a parish priest and discuss what is going on and take his advice on how to become a faithful Catholic again.
In the meantime, do not date anyone.Get back in the swing of Catholic life. Read Catholic books, magazines,newspapers, webpages. Listen to Catholic radio. Make sure you are praying daily.
