Divorce, remarriage and communion

I am a writer for the Washington Post, working on a few articles related to the Pope’s upcoming visit to the United States – and I have been spending a lot of time lurking on this site recently, to help me better understand various issues and the ways people discuss them. For one of my articles, I am seeking to speak with people who have been divorced and remarried – and who, because they or their current spouses have not yet received annulments for their previous marriages, are not currently receiving communion.

Right now, I am in the stage where I’m just talking with lots of different people, which helps me become a better writer and thinker when I ultimately write my article. I would very much like to talk with any members here who happened to be in that situation – and I invite you to send me an email if the idea of sharing your story with others seem like it would be interesting or beneficial to you.

Please exercise some charity, otherwise you play right into the images people who do not have favorable opinions of Christians.

Christ told us loving our enemies is far more virtuous than loving family and friends.
 
For anyone interested: please be careful. While this might be a completely legitimate and decent request, I am slightly disturbed that the Pope’s visit to the USA is generating articles specifically about divorced and remarried people receiving Communion. The possibility exists that the Washington Post wants to publish yet another article bemoaning how unfair Catholic doctrine is and is looking for people’s gripes. I mean…if you are working on a series of Papal visit articles, why not also solicit stories about how excited we are to see him and how far we plan to travel to be in one of the cities he visits and how previous papal journeys have affected us? We all know how the media generally loves to spin their stories on Pope Francis. And I believe the last few articles I read from the Washington Post were not exactly conservative.

To the original poster: I mean no disrespect and am not trying to make your job more difficult or to accuse you personally of being biased one way or the other (I never met you, after all!). I commend you for coming on a Catholic board and soliciting ideas from true Catholics. However, I believe that the way the liberal media in general has been taking Pope Francis’ statements out of context or acting like he is the first pope to endorse certain positions when St. John Paul II or others did the same merits us our concern.
 
I read “The long drive to end a pregnancy.” It was very well written. But so extremely sad. The young woman who killed her unborn baby wrote the following in a journal kept at the abortion clinic: “I loved my baby, Bo, dearly, and I hope in the coming years I will believe that this was the best decision for both of us. He will be in my heart and on my mind always.” Everyone please say a prayer for this poor woman.
 
Do not feed the trolls! The WashPost is a liberal newspaper that is clearly in favor of issues such as gay marriage, transgender acceptance, abortion, global warming ect… They do not like the church at all. They will take your story and misconstrue it in an attempt to somehow “change” the church and lead Catholics away from the true faith.
May God please bless and watch over this Journalist! However, please do not respond to this journalist’s request to have dialogue on divorce, remarriage and communion.

Hey, I’ll assume the OP is on the level. Have you read the relevant sections of the Catechism? Might be good to familiarize yourself with the teaching of the Church in this area, understand the limits of what the Pope can and can’t do.

That is the restrictions on receiving communion in general related to mortal sin. You do realize that we as Catholics believe that communion is the actual Body of Christ and not to be taken when in a state of mortal sin? As Paul warned, it is not to be eaten unworthily: 1 Corinthians 11, 27-29
" Therefore whoever eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord unworthily will have to answer for the body and blood of the Lord. person should examine himself,* and so eat the bread and drink the cup. For anyone who eats and drinks without discerning the body, eats and drinks judgment* on himself.

Probably should search for sections on the Catholic teachings on marriage as a sacrament which is permanent.

As background, I’m divorced, I petitioned for and received an affirmative decision for a declaration of nullity, not remarried and haven’t dated since the wife divorced me.
