As a young girl, I married my high school sweetheart. We are both Roman Catholics. Less than 18 months later, we divorced. After 30 years we have reconnected and would like to remarry. Would this remarriage to each other be condoned by the church and could we participate in Holy Communion again? Could we remarry in the Catholic church?
 
In the eyes of the Church, you are still married. Civil divorce is not recognised by the Church. You do not say if either of you re-married in the meantime. You may want to discuss your situation with a priest so he can suggest the best route.

have there been intervening marriages and divorces
see your pastor, the priest is the only one who can give you an answer that applies to your specific situation
almost certainly he will advise counselling to help you see why you divorced in the first place
 
Unless one of you asked for and received official annulment, you are still married. Ask your pastor for the procedure to be blessed by the Church, but you can marry only if annulment was declared.
 
What everyone has told you so far is correct - and you need to answer a few questions.

In sum, if your original marriage to this man was a Catholic one, and neither of you obtained a decree of nullity for that marriage, then you have never been “unmarried” to your “childhood sweetheart”, regardless of the number of marriages you contracted in the interim.

To receive communion, you would obviously need to go to Confession and ask forgiveness for having lived with and been intimate with (I assume) other(s) since your civil divorce and now.

The WORST situation you could be in is if either of you remarried in a Catholic wedding and neither of you obtained a decree of nullity for your first marriage. THEN, you would have some serious problems to deal with.

You really want to have a talk with your priest. He will want to know if you were married in the church or not. Did you apply for a decree of nullity? Have there been any other attempts at marriage? Are there children involved?

What do you mean by “could we participate in Holy Communion again”? Have you kept away from the sacraments all this time? Why?
