 Can a divorced and then remarried person receive the Holy Eucharist? First marriage wasn’t recognized by the Church, nor has the second marriage been recognized. To my knowledge this situation hasn’t been reconciled with the Church. Knowing what I know, am I obligated to say something to that person or our Pastor?
Any advice is welcome. :bowdown2:

You said “First marriage wasn’t recognized by the Church.” that means it was delared Null by the Church Tribunal?

Why hasn’t the second been recognized?

Yes you should speak with the person. They should not approach Holy Communion while in a unresolved irregular marriage situation.

Ok, what I mean is that the marriages, first and second, did not take place in a Catholic Church by a Priest. They were civil marriages outside the Church. Presently there’s been one civil divorce and one civil marriage. Thank you for your response!

Let’s see if I get this right:

A Catholic person you know married outside the church without dispensation, then divorced that person, then married again outside the church without dispensation.

If the above statement is correct, then unless your Catholic friend has: gone to Confession and repented of living in sin (unmarried in the eyes of the church) and has promised to live “as brother and sister” with his/her current “spouse” as well as any other sins of course then the answer is NO he or she cannot receive.

Why? Because for a Catholic to attempt marriage outside the Church without dispensation results in that person living in sin (fornication) because that marriage is not recognized by the church at all. A Catholic is under obligation to marry in the church or to receive a dispensation from the bishop to marry in another church to be recognized as a valid marriage.

Your friend, despite being legally married to this new spouse, is, in the eyes of the church, doing nothing more than having sex outside of (sacramental) marriage.

I don’t know if you are under obligation to point this out to the priest. You could ask your priest, “If I knew of someone that I believed to be in a state of mortal sin and still receiving the Eucharist would you want to know?”

I think you might be under obligation though to point this out to your friend. How you do this though depends on how close your relationship is.
