Can a man become a Deacon if he has been divorced and remarried?

Hi!
Did an annulment take place? If not remember Christ was asked about divorce by the Pharisees. See His reply Mat19:1-12

A MAN CAN BECOME A PERMANENT DEACON, A PRIEST, A BISHOP OR THE POPE IF HE’S BEEN DIVORCED AND REMARRIED. SO LONE AS HE HAS OBTAINED AN ANNULMENT.

Wow are you people fast! Ireland, too! Technology is cool. With an annulment. Forgot to put in that most important piece of info. Thanks to all.

:hmmm: Priest, Bishop, Pope and remarried? I presume you assume the spouse has passed on 😛

From the BASIC NORMS FOR THE FORMATION OF PERMANENT DEACONS:
  1. “In the case of married men, care should be taken that only those are promoted to the diaconate who have lived as married men for a number of years and have shown themselves to be capable of running their own homes, and whose wives and children lead a truly Christian life and have good reputations”.
Moreover. In addition to stability of family life, married candidates cannot be admitted unless “their wives not only consent, but also have the Christian moral character and attributes which will neither hinder their husbands’ ministry nor be out of keeping with it”.

Then he was never considered by the Church to have been Married!

As many have said the answer is a no.

If you have received a valid marriage without defect then remarriage after divorce forever bars you from receiving any additional sacraments due the perpetual state of adultery you would find yourself in.

A declaration of nullity states that no marriage ever existed, once obtained there is no impediment from recieving Holy Orders.

God Bless

Well, it would have to be Deacon, Priest, Bishop AND Pope.

Any Catholic male can be elected Pope, married or not. And per canon law, if such a male has not been ordained to the Episcopate, he is to be so ordained.

That would make that man Pope, Bishop, Priest, Deacon and married…and highly unlikely 😃
