I was married the first time to a catholic man when I was 20. We were married 25 years and had 2 children when one day he said he wanted a divorce and there was no discussing the matter. We had always gone to mass during our marriage and it was very important to me. He said he made up his mind and our marriage was finished. He later married a woman friend of ours. Two years later I found a man that I feel in love with and was married by a minister outside the Catholic Church and we were married 8 years when I discovered he was having an affair. He said he wanted out of the marriage since he wanted to be with this other women so we divorced. We did not go to church during those 8 years since he wasn’t a church goer and I always felt there was something very important missing in my life. I have since come back to the Church and would like to receive communion and don’t know what I need to do. Can I go confession and be forgiven and then be able to receive communion? Do I need an annullment for both marriages if I should ever find someone to remarry?

Hi,

The Church still considers your first marriage to be valid. But as long as you live in a celibate way you may go to Confession and receive Holy Communion. It may be possible that your first marriage be annulled since you were so young. You might want to see a local priest about this.
