Hi everyone;

We invited a couple over on Labor Day, that we have become friends with over the past year of living in Florida. (hard to believe we have been here OVER a year now):o The husband showed, without his wife, and he brought with him, their 8 month old baby, and daughter who is a grade lower than my dd…(she is in 6th grade)

Let’s refer to him as…‘Bob.’ Bob proceeds to tell us that his marriage is failing, and that his wife (we will call her Barbara) Barbara, is away with friends. He proceeded to tell us that they are going through counseling, and that Barbara has resurrected an old relationship with a married man, from her days back in high school, when they were classmates. He is suspicious that their problems began when he entered into the picture. (I wonder too, because they go to dinners together, without their spouses a lot, he said)

She’s a SAHM, used to work, and is saying that he is controlling, etc…and she wants to go back to work. Knowing him, I could see her stance, but he really seemed to be an improved person, when we saw him on Labor Day. My dh and I tried to give him advice…we said we would keep them both in our prayers.

Ok…so fast forward to today–Barbara and I car pool, and her choice, is to pick up my dd after school, when she goes to pick up her own dd from school. So, I call my dd just now to make sure everything was ok at home, and she tells me that Barbara told her that she was sorry she didn’t join the party on Labor Day–that it’s best if Bob and her aren’t in the same room, and that they are getting a divorce. My dd didn’t know what to say. Barbara and Bob seemed so happy when we lived next door to them last year, I’m not sure what happened to them!😦

Anyways…what do you make of this? Bob made it sound like he and she were going to try to work on things. Do you think that she came back and decided over the weekend she was gone with friends, that a divorce is best? I ask, because I don’t understand why they are getting a divorce, when they just had a baby.😦

I don’t want to gossip about my neighbors…I’m just wondering if there is anything I can do as their friend–to help them? My dh and I told them to head back to church–asap! That our faith saved our marriage, and it probably would save theirs.

Sometimes, people don’t want to hear that though.🤷

Your thoughts are appreciated. Have you ever helped a non family member repair their marriage? I know they can be helped! :banghead:

I don’t really have any advice, but I am shocked that she told your daughter to tell you.

I would call her and offer your shoulder during the tough times, but gently remind her to leave your daughter out of it.

I agree, that I was taken aback when my dd told me this. We expressly told her not to say anything, not that she would, but made sure she wouldn’t disclose anything that was said to us in confidence.

I guess the problem with these things, is it’s one person’s ‘word’ against another’s. I hesitate to get in the middle, but I know with all of my heart, mind and soul, that if they were to both surrender their lives to Christ, and get back into church…things would improve. The other issue is he is Catholic, she is non denom…but they could maybe select a parish they are comfortable with, and give it a chance.

I just hate seeing marriages end, when you know they can be saved. He is a good man–she’s a good woman. She was a single mom for a long time before meeting him, and he adopted her dd.😦 I mean…this will be sad on so many levels.

Thanks for writing back, and listening.

Not with any luck.

After 32 years of marriage, we’ve had close friends divorce after 20-25 years of marriage. Sometimes we saw it coming, sometimes not.

I don’t think you can ever really know what goes on behind someone’s doors. Secular people nowdays look at divorce as no big deal.

I once saw a argument about a door escalate, and when it is was over 3 months later, divorce papers were flying and a 3 year marriage came to an end.

“We care about you and will pray for you, we will be there for you, we will not take sides” Hug, repeat.

You can try telling them about Retrouvaille–the only thing I’ve actually seen work, but that is only if both spouses actually want the marriage to be saved. 🤷 In this case, especially if there is an affair as he says (and a baby that may or may not be his if there was an affair), there is little chance. 😦 Just try not to take sides, or you’ll end up as one of the ‘bad guys’.

Heeeeyyy…I wonder if they’d go for this. I know I’ll be seeing ‘Barbara’ again…maybe I could mention it to her. :o

Bama–I know. This is one I didn’t see coming.😦

kage–good advice. I won’t take sides…I just wonder, like what Teaka is suggesting, if that would be appropriate. If my marriage was struggling, I might appreciate someone bringing this to my attention. Yes? No?
