Did anyone notice as the female lead was being whipped by the slave owner holding and quoting the bible as justification for his evil actions the lady was hold the rosary in desperation.

Yeah Broomhilda has a rosary wrapped around her wrist as they’re whipping her and the guy that’s whipping her is quoting from scripture. Hmmm…not sure if it was intentional but Tarantino tends to be pretty intentional with the stuff he puts in his movies.

Even if you feel that slaveowners misinterpeted scripture to say it approved slavery, it’s historically accurate to say many slaveholders in America used scripture to justify slavery.

Interesting.

The largest slave rebellion in American history (the Stono Rebellion) was led by Catholic slaves. Those slaves who had been taken from the Congo were largely Catholic (the Congo even had diplomatic relations with the Vatican), and they understandably objected to being held as slaves by people whom they thought were fellow Christians.

To be honest, Mike from NJ, many atheists and “freethinkers” of the Enlightenment (such as Hume) also used their secular values to justify slavery, and considered Africans as subhumans.

Yeah, we’re aware of that mike. That wasn’t really the point.
My mistake. Often times when a reference is made in CAF to something unseemly in popular media vis-a-vis Catholicism it’s usually in the vein of “Don’t you hate how the media portrays catholics?” I thought this was one of those times.

I found the movie morally offensive and very inacurate historically. It is true that slavery was justified (incorrectly) by many quoting scripture. People will use anything they can to justify what they want to do. It does make it correct or accurate. The nazi’s played that game. Using genetics and made up mythology about a master german race to justify their mass extermination of millios and plundering of other countries. It you look at the bare bones underneather. The nazi regime was going bankrupt suppling subsidies to the german population which they used to hold and gain power. With each new country came revenue and supplies to help prop up their power but by the time they got to invading Russia they where already going bankrupt again. It was all economics. Slavery was the same all economics supported by propoganda.

Yes there are many negative elements of the movie but I love te rosary

It was a little over the top for me as movies go. That they included a rosary in one of the scenes is something I missed.

We could probably start a whole thread on clues that a character in a movie is Catholic.

Lt. Dans (Gary Sinise’s character) in “Forrest Gump” wears his dogtags on a rosary throughout the movie (which actually belonged to Sinise’s brother).

In “Skyfall,” there is a broad hint that James Bond comes from a traditionally Catholic family (so despite some of his, um, morally questionable activities, we can presume that he was baptized as a child and is Catholic.)
