It seems like a really cool story. I just don’t like the “funny” action movies like this, similar to Inglorious Bast#$ds.

I know that is Tarentino’s “thing”, I just don’t like the “cheesiness” he embraces in these films.

it was the best film of 2012. 🙂
Did you see ‘The Beasts of Southern Wild’?

The little girl who was the main character, Quvenzhané Wallis, is the youngest person to ever recieve a Best Actress Oscar nomination.

I found her to be a very compelling actress, and the movie very emotion provoking. (In a good way 🙂 )

Saw it and loved it! I liked how there were no sexual scenes in it. Sure they use very colorful language, but they were really trying to capture how people talked back then. The N word was used just as common then as ‘that guy’ or ‘that dude’ is used now.
Can’t wait till its on DVD! 😃

I do like those types of story lines. They’re inspiring.

I like those types of story lines too. They inspire me as well. I’ve been through some hard times and spent some of that time filled with hate and resentment. Some of those situations I couldn’t get out of or it would have pretty drastic life consequences. So yeah, I admire people who take suffering with grace because I can learn from that. And it is one aspect of Christianity whether we like it or not. Sometimes I don’t like it - particularly when I’m struggling to apply it to my life. I get that you don’t like films like that but I don’t think people like that are two dimensional. I haven’t seen Driving Miss Daisy but I really liked The Help. And back in The Roots days, you made a choice between life as a slave or possibly slow and painful death as a free man. It’s romantic to think of everyone choosing death for freedom but it’s cruel to criticize someone who chooses slavery and chooses to make the best of it. Or to erase such characters from history or fiction as if they were a disgrace to humanity.
Great points and yes, it is romantic to think everyone would choose death…And yes, Catholicism is a religion of “both and” as opposed to “either or”.

So on that note, I would like to see more movies of the fighters (Loved Malcolm X for the this reason): Nat Turner, John Brown, The Slave Revolt in Haiti, Frederick Douglass etc, etc.

Beasts of the Southern Wild was the most original movie I saw this year and I am rooting for Ms. Wallis to win the Best Actress Oscar, but for great, rollicking fun, Django beats it hands down, IMO.

I haven’t seen any of those but Malcolm X but that was a great one! I feel it really showed both sides - the fight and the compassion in the man who wanted to change the world. 👍

And don’t let me mislead anyone into thinking I don’t like a great angry action movie with revenge. I love all the Jet Li Golden Harvest Films and my favorite Bruce Lee movie was Big Boss! I am looking forward to watching Django Unchained.

Do you really view Nat Turner or the Haitian Revolution as instructive models of justice? You should read about what actually happened in those days.

The first 3/4 of the movie was good, the last quarter not so much. It went of the tracks at that point.

I fail to see how a gang of thugs roaming the countryside and indiscriminately murdering men, women and children are virtuous examples. Nat Turner was nothing more than a common terrorist. Nor even can Nat Turner’s rebellion lead to any good either. The result of all that bloodshed was just violent reprisals in turn against blacks and further legal oppression of black Americans.

I agree! I saw it today and thought it should have ended at the climax…hopefully you know which scene I’m talking about. It went on too long. Other than that I liked it.

Use of the words, “Terrorist” and “Thug”, is, I think reductive, but Wikipedia said it best in the following way and this is why I would like to see a movie made of him:

"Turner’s legacy takes on a heroic status as someone willing to make slave-owners pay for the hardships that they enacted upon the millions of children, women and men they enslaved.[16] Black church historical writer James H. Harris has argued that the revolt “marked the turning point in the black struggle for liberation” since, in his view, “only a cataclysmic act could convince the architects of a violent social order that violence begets violence.”

So he should have taken his slavery in stride? Or what… what should he have done?

They probably shouldn’t have killed any children, though acting rationally when you have been treated like an animal all your life is not exactly easy…

👍

So he should have taken his slavery in stride?
St. Paul seems to think so.

“Slaves, be obedient to those who are your masters according to the flesh, with fear and trembling, in the sincerity of your heart, as to Christ; not by way of eyeservice, as men-pleasers, but as slaves of Christ, doing the will of God from the heart. With good will render service, as to the Lord, and not to men, knowing that whatever good thing each one does, this he will receive back from the Lord, whether slave or free” (Ephesians 6:5-8).
They probably shouldn’t have killed any children…
Yeah, probably.

Do we excuse the behavior of someone just because we can understand it? Surely the actions of Adolf Hitler or Osama bin Laden are capable of being understood, but that does not make their actions examples of Christian charity.

I decided not to see it as I am sure its full of swearing, nudity and unnecessary violence. I don’t mind violence but making it over the top for no reason is just pointless. I saw one movie Tarantino wrote and at the end I just felt so empty. I enjoy directors who have a sense of style and originality but Tarantino’s stuff is just too immoral for me. That said I don’t mind the premise of the movie.

It’s not full of nudity. There were one or two very brief flashes of nudity. There were zero sex scenes, which was one of my favorite parts.
