DNA modification: can I claim the throne of England?

Jas VI and I had extramarital affairs of the homosexual kind, but at least he was a wily ruler. Chas I was pretty good at starting civil wars. Chas II had extramarital affairs wholesale. Jas II had extramarital affairs and lost the kingdom. Not a successful crowd. Mary II and Anne were pretty mediocre.

Different Royal family, the heir of Monaco is Jacques, the son of Prince Albert.

But Prince Albert fathered some children out of wedlock. He pays maintenance and has visitation, but they aren’t the heirs to the throne.

But surely if my dna changes, I am in effect an heir to the Electress Sophie?
Not really. I think the term “heirs of the body” suggests that there has to be an unbroken line of succession through actual physical reproduction. If it were possible to clone Prince Charles, I don’t think the clone would count as an heir of the body of Queen Elizabeth II. The other crucial term is “lawfully begotten”. I don’t think DNA modification would count as being begotten. At the end of the day, this would have to be adjudicated in the courts, and what any court would ask would be, “What was the will of Parliament?” Clearly the will of Parliament did not include DNA modification.

Personally, as an American, I would love to see a Catholic monarchy restored in the UK and the present day United States brought under its sovereignty…

That’s one view but it isn’t the only one. When a sentence begins with a statement that someone has a right to something it begs the question, where does such a right come from? In the US, the revolutionaries simply seized the right for themselves and declared it was theirs. I don’t see that as a particularly good basis for anything and I don’t see that the electoral system they set up has done anything to eliminate that original illegitimacy.

I’m Catholic, so I know I can’t. Also, there is no longer an English throne, not since the Acts of Union in 1707.

Too bad. I thought the British were always keen on the idea of re-establishing the empire and restoring their position as the world’s greatest superpower.

(Nothing personal, British CAFers 🙂)

My auntie has been trying to get me to join DAR for many years

Indeed. I have in mind more of a two-stage process. First, Britain becomes Catholic again, then it restores the British Empire. I know that by the time the British (English) Empire took off, England was already a Protestant country. I see this as a way of building the greatest Catholic empire in the history of the world.

Oh, you might do better to start with Spain, a wholesome Catholic monarchy. Begin by applying to join the United Mexican States, perhaps. After all, you’ve got possession of quite a bit of Mexico to start with. 🙂

Not sure how you’d manage that, but I’m afraid succession to the British throne (if that’s the one you’re after) is determined by Act of Parliament.
There have been claims that the british crown is elective since the War of the Roses.

Of course, this claim is generally made by the king that has won the war of succession . . .

But it brought about the interesting possibility of skipping over Charles . . .
Catholics can’t ascrnd the British throne.
They an when they win the war of succession!

(of course, that would probably bring jacobite claimants out of the woodwork . . )
The first thing I shall do is offer knighthoods to my liberal antagonists as an olive branch.
You understand that it’s done with a vertical tap on the shoulder with the flat of the sword, and not a horizontal swipe with the sharp edge, aren’t you?

😜 🤣

But if strange women in lakes start handing out swords again . . .

According to what incontrovertible principle? The assertion of the self appointed and unmandated Founding Fathers of the US? Or the scribblings of Rousseau and his friends?

When I look back on a long and idle life, I see certain milestones, dates when an age passed. They would include the point when people no longer recognised ITMA catchphrases (which I knew because my parents kept repeating them), and when people no longer recognised jokes from the Goon Show. If we have now reached the stage when people no longer recognise lines from Python I must be getting extraordinarily old indeed.
