Well, it’s not the only issue. At least not for those of us who are not single-issue voters, which I’ve never been.
Did he say it was “not important”?
Andrea Mitchell asked about Trumps attack on Joe Bidens’ faith… Andrea Nitchell talks about Biden faith.

Father Martin… “It is very hard to respond to that. Those ad hominem attacks that the president gave are really reprehensible, especially to attack the faith of someone. You have no idea what is going on in someone’s soul. And to make those claims is really out of bounds.I am not sure how you would respond to that other than by continuing to be faithful and going to mass and trying to be a good Catholic.”

Andrea Mitchell …“How important is it to have a Catholic back in the White House”

Father Martin… “I think it is important for Catholics and certainly while it is clear that he doesn’t believe in the Church on everything, faith animates his life and he has spoken about it often. We have to trust that this is a man who has a relationship with God and with Jesus Christ and tries to be the best Catholic he can be. Certainly and I think Catholic social teaching example will be a strong influence on him.”

Andrea Mitchell… “Is it a problem for the Church that he has been on the other side of Church on teachings on the issue of a woman’s choice”

Father Martin…“It is especially for some Catholics, for many Catholics but again there is not one party that encompasses Church teaching so the Democrats are not very good on abortion and the Republicans are not very good on immigration so neither party has a lot on the Catholic vote and it is something the Catholics have to determine up to their own conscience which candidate best reflects their own religious sentiments but then again neither party has a lock on Catholic teachings”

Andrea Mitchell. “Tonight will be ecumenical.”

There’s nothing untrue in any of those statements.

As I have mentioned before, I’m pretty sure Joe still goes to church and prays the rosary. I don’t applaud his behavior on abortion and gay marriage, but I don’t think he’s fallen away. I just saw a mass intention for his dead son in the bulletin of the family’s parish in June, obviously there’s still a connection there. So yeah, he’s probably a man of faith. I think Trump probably is, too.
