I got the impression that many, most, or perhaps all Bishops have PhD’s in theology before being elevated to their position. This would seem to make sense given the nature of the job as an official teacher of the Faith.

Anyone have more specific details on this?

All bishops of the Apostolic Succession automatically receive the DD (Doctor of Divinity) degree upon their consecration.

While canon law states that bishops should have at least a Licentate in Sacred Theology (STL), other proof of expertise is acceptable. I know of several bishops who do not have an STL.

Hi LotusCarsLtd,

As others have said, it is not required. For a listing of US bishops and their advanced degrees, scroll through this site, which seems pretty accurate and thorough:

canonlaw.info/ten_bishops.htm

Note that every bishop will have a “master of divinity” degree, even though it isn’t listed. Also, not many will have PhDs but may have a JCD/JCL (canon law) or STD/STL (theology) or other ecclesiastical degree…
