Being Pope does not save a soul or even make one holy.

Isn’t there a bible verse about more power, more responsibility? Or something of the sort?

Dante’s inferno talks a lot about clergy in Hell. I realize it’s just a poem but it’s scary!

Isn’t there a famous quote about the floor of hell being paved with skulls of bishops or something similar?

Purgatory would seem like a given for most of humankind. I think the more responsibilities one has, the more opportunities there are to mess up. Part of being a leader is to have to make decisions for multitudes of people.

If it weren’t possible then ALL popes would have the title of saint. And many of them dont! That doesnt mean that they aren’t in heaven though.

I still have a reasonable hope no one is in hell. Lol
Well of course that is a nice thought. But it begs the question. Why did Jesus talk about people going to hell so much?

I guess, since nobody goes to hell incantations omit that part if the Fatima prayer right? “Save us from the fires of hell” we have no idea who is in hell. We only know the canonized saints in heaven. But purgatory (eventual heaven) and non canonized saints we also dont know. Heaven hell and purgatory are the only options. Two of those are permanent.

Popes can certainly be damned–whether any have been, only God knows (just like, other than those canonized as saints, whether any have been saved only God knows). Dante’s Inferno famously put a couple Popes in Hell (although one was ultimately canonized a Saint–Celestine V).

Off the top of my head, St. Bridget had a vision of Urban V going to purgatory (he was ultimately beatified in 1870, so it seems he likely made it to Heaven).

If you don’t mind my asking, why is your hope reasonable? This is always something I am curious about. I do hope that everyone is given a final chance at repentence before their death, all ng with the accompanying grace to support them. I do tend to think, that considering modern culture, invincible ignorance is widespread.

But I also think there are people who are extremely obstinate and proud. We can reasonably hope that any given person is saved. Can we reasonably apply that to all?

Personally, since there’s only one way to find out for sure, I’m in no hurry to find out 😃

Well, there are not that many popes, and if we make it to heaven, it won’t take that long to go down the list and see who is accounted for, we have eternity after all. 🙂
