While Catholics believe in a very real devil, I personally hesitate to attribute all, or even most, temptations to an external source. To me that line of thinking can easily lead to not taking responsibility for my own actions. It does not matter where the temptations come from, ultimately I am the one who acts on them or resists them. Also, I think that in order to avoid sin it is helpful to me to accept that it is me who wants this not some sneaky devil. This helps me to analyze myself and my motivations so that I can work through them rather than simply assuming that they just popped in to my head. To avoid a pattern of the same sin, we must deal with ourselves internally. That’s just my opinion.

Well…i disagree. Attributing all temptations to the devil , does not prevent you from taking responsibility for your actions!! To the contrary. Knowing that you are being tempted, then acting on the temptation, now leaves you where?? It leaves you making choice that you are 100% aware of. You spotted the temptation as evil/from the devil. Then you weigh it out in your head…untill??? Untill you either fall into the devils trap, or are strong enough to resist it. Either way… how can you not have ownership, over something that you have invested time & thought into ??? Its not “passing the buck” it is simply keeping inventory of your choices in life, and knowing where your thoughts (good or bad) are coming from. When i I began my actual awarness of these forces, I have improved on choosing the right way! Its a lot harder to listen to the temptations, when you know the sender is the devil himself… Would you open an e-mail that you knew would damage your computer??? probably not!!! Same goes for the spiritual warefare that we call temptation. If you knew a messege, or thought came from God you would listen closely & welcome it , right?? So when the devil creeps into your life, rejecting its messege, thought or whatever it displays to you is a victory for all that is holy!!! Oh…and if you believe in God there must be a devil…
