Do anglicans make the sign of the cross?
I sure do!Do anglicans make the sign of the cross?
Coming in late, but I’ll also note that Anglicans frequently genuflect, bow at the Holy Name, and at the invocation of the Trinity, kneel during the Creed, at the appropriate place, reverence the Presence reserved in the Tablernacle, etc, etc. Yes, I know you didn’t ask, but I like to spread the word.Do anglicans make the sign of the cross?

Sure is. Our assistant priest has a particular devotion to the BVM, esp. as Our Lady Of Walsingham, Our small Mary Shrine contains her statue. In our parish it is customary at Mass to be reminded to commit our prayers and intentions to the intercession of Our Lady. And we close the Mass with the Angelus.GKC
Seeing all this that Anglicans do and also hearing that some of you guys also have a devotion to Mary (is this true?)
It depends on what sort of Anglican is in the picture. Anglicans range across a spectrum (for complicated historical reasons that I’ve done here before; re: the Elizabethan Compromise), from more reformed and evangelical, to the Anglo-Catholics (and the Anglo-Papalists). A more reformed Anglican will not cause a standard brand Evangelical to twitch his nose as much as we Anglo-Catholics do.I have to wonder how do Anglicans and say mainstream evangelicals get along? Sorry I couldnt come up with a better way to put it then, “get along.”
Oh, sure, and the more Anglo-Catholic, the more likely they will do so. Since on such issues as you mention, and others (Real Presence, Baptism for remission of sins, Sacerdotal priesthood, Apostolic Succession, etc), there is no difference between you and many Anglicans as to basic belief. Hence we need to be led to the light, too.I know my fiance’s father has many problems with Catholicism, such as the Real Presence and Baptism both of which I know Anglicans would be closer to Catholics than him. I am just curious if they try to witness to you guys as they do Catholics.
Pax tecum.God Bless
All of this is so. And yes, it’s quite unlikely that the 2 churches in VA will go the Pastoral Provision route (though there are other options than going to the REC). But it does happen amongst the Anglo-Catholic variety. It happened in my home town, about 25 years ago. That’s now a standard NO RC church, but it started as the RC Church of the Good Shepherd, Anglican Use (not Rite). There is a lot of variety, diversity, amoung Episcopalians/“Anglicans”.
No two people are likely to do the same thing. Maybe one out of ten make the sign of the cross with Holy Water at the font. Some Episcopalians cross themselves at the beginning of Mass, others don’t. Some cross themselves on forehead, lips, and heart at the Gospel, and at other times during the Mass, others never cross themselves, thinking it is too Catholic.
The priest always crosses at the blessing, the foregiviness of sins, the people in the pews may or may not cross themselves back.
It is a lot like the Episcopal saying about auricular confession. “All may, some should, but none must.”
There are a lot of LOW church, Evangelical Episcopalians. The are kind of disrepected amoung High Church, Anglo Catholic Epsicopalians. They like to call these people and their habits “Virginia Churchmanship”. Like the two parishes in Virginia, that are trying to leave the Epsicopal church and take the churches property with them,
A lot of people seem to have fantasys about them joining the Catholic church, “Anglican Rite”.
There is no way, if they leave the Episcopal church it will likely be to the “Reformed Episcopal church,” a group that has already left over 150 years ago. They call their priests “Ministers” and “Mister so-and-so, instead of Father.”
Always glad to be useful. Tell him my parish regularly prays for Benedict, by name, among the faithful bishops. That ought to frost him. Thanks GKC
I know there is nothing more that irritates my fiance’s father than when my fiance brings up Non-Catholic Christians who hold similar beliefs as us. It drives him :whacky:
He is always talking about all these, “Catholic” practices that “bible Christians” wouldn’t follow… Then all she has to do is point to Lutherans and Anglicans. Gets him everytime.
Is he willing to admit Anglicans or Lutherans as Bible Christians?God Bless
He would take exception to your beliefs in the Real Presence and Baptism among other things. He would especially not like the fact that you guys have any sort of devotion to Mary. He subscribes to the David Hunt and John MacArthur theology. Is he willing to admit Anglicans or Lutherans as Bible Christians?
We asked him to compare some of his beliefs to some of those Reformers who gave their lives… We still havent gotten a responseDuring the reformation, countless men and women gave their lives rather than deny the biblical truths about salvation.
Ah, but we are with you. And Catholic, too. But don’t tell him. Makes us more useful. He would take exception to your beliefs in the Real Presence and Baptism among other things. However he is in a Protestant v Catholic mindset, so as long as you are not with us (Catholics), you are with him.
Here is a line from an email he sent us:

You got me curious GKC. Do you have any good reading on this Anglo-Catholic stuff?Ah, but we are with you. And Catholic, too. But don’t tell him. Makes us more useful.

Who is David Hunt?He would take exception to your beliefs in the Real Presence and Baptism among other things. He would especially not like the fact that you guys have any sort of devotion to Mary. He subscribes to the David Hunt and John MacArthur theology.
