Being born and raised Catholic, it has always been to my understanding that human beings have souls and other living things do not. This has always been a defining characteristic of human beings and destinguishes us from other living things. We are created in the image of God which means our spiritual aspect, the soul. Whereas, animals do not have souls, right? It seems I already have my mind made up from this posting thus far but the reason why I am asking this question is due to a recent answer I received in an e-mail concerning someone else’s question in the daily five:
The Question was, “Do misacarried fetuses have souls? If so, what happens to them?”
The response was:
“All living things have souls, and all human beings have spiritual, rational souls made in the image and likeness of God. If a human being is conceived then that person has a spiritual, rational soul. So, yes, miscarried children do indeed have human souls. As for their eternal destiny, they share the same hope for heaven that the Church believes is possible for all unbaptized children (cf. CCC 1261)”
I’m confused and it would really help to have some clarification, thanks,
