Hi all,

Are there any Catholics on the Forum who like Southern Gospel music? If so, what do you like about it? What are yoru favorite acts?

I just discovered a radio station in Asheville, North Carolina with a Southern Gospel music format and I listen to it on the Net (after Rush and Father Corapi, of course).

Although the station is owned by the Billy Graham Evangelistic Assocation, I’ve noticed that most of the lyrics so far are theologically correct, or at least not offensive to Catholic dogma. There might be some but I haven’t heard them yet.

Not sure what you mean by “southern gospel.” I very much enjoy bluegrass and gospel bluegrass, for example, Doyle Lawson, Blue Highway, and bands like that.

Some I like…some I can’t stand.

I enjoy Gospel Quartets…I grew up on Gospel music, and do like it. But, just as in anything else, I don’t like it all. I like the Gather people, and the Greens.

yep! I like them too. The Cathedrals were always a favorite of ours too. We got to see their last show. They were the best, then the Kingsman and Gold City.

I like Sqire Parsons, Sandy Patty and Larnel also.

Yes, I do. But you have to watch out for some stations. They will mingle anti-catholic programs in their program schedule. Some of my favorites were JD Sumner and the Stamps, the Cathedrals, and the Gaithers. There is also a few on RFD-TV

I grew up on it too, had relatives that were in some of the first SG groups in the country, back in the early 20th century. I played/wrote it some. I still like it. I tune out the songs that seem to be aired at the get-out-of-this-world, rapture-me-now, take-me-to-my-mansion crowd.

Gene - I’m about an hour south of Asheville - which station is it, so I can try tuning in?

I can take it or leave it. Of the genre, I prefer the more staid and country types of gospel music.

Hi Trimont,

The station is WFGW. However, they just switched formats to talk for the radio broadcast, but they now have a separate audio stream on their Web site that continues the Southern Gospel music format.

By the way, my wife and I are thinking of moving to Asheville in the next year or two. I’d like to dialogue about the Diocese of Charlotte, living in the Bible Belt as a Catholic, etc. If you are interested, should I start a separate thread? (I noticed that the Moderators are getting stricter about starting new threads.)

Grace and peace,
Gene

I love gospel music. I love the Statler Bros and the Gaithers and Johnny Cash’s gospel songs, and songs like “Some glad morning when this life is over I’ll fly away” and “Just a little talk with Jesus makes it right”
The lyrics to “The Great Speckled Bird” are interesting… Some people think it is about the Bible, but I wonder if it is about the Church
These aren’t liturgical songs but they are certainly great to sing and pray : ) at home or with friends

Hi Gene, I would be happy to share my (limited) experience within the Charlotte diocese. I’ve only lived here a couple years and have only been to Mass in Asheville once. I live in Franklin and I have to say that my parish is wonderful! The pastor is one of the new, young conservatives, 30 years old and the holiest priest I’ve ever had the pleasure of knowing. His obvious faith and reverence is so awesome. I do have much to say about this and would love to share it with you, just not sure if it belongs on this thread - so, if you’re interested, maybe you’d want to start another thread concerning this diocese in particular (which could be enlightening & interesting), or contact me with a private message.

Trimont,

Thanks! I’ll start another thread rather than go private because I think others might be uplifted or encouraged by our conversation.

I’ll put it under The Water Cooler and title it, The Diocese of Charlotte.

Grace and peace,
Gene

My dad has spent his life in the ministry; he IS a Southern Gospel singer J I’ve had the amazing privilege to know some of the fine people mentioned in this thread, as they are my father’s old “cronies”.

The old songs bring tears to my eyes, I am fortunate to have recordings of my father from over 40 years ago. A few years ago, we had special guests at Mass who were a Catholic Southern Gospel Quartet – wish I could remember the name… I miss the Gospel “Singings”, where people would come and just sing for hours and hours, maybe have a dinner on the grounds, then go back and sing more.

The poster who mentioned the lyrics to “Great Speckled Bird” – that song hit me upside the head a few weeks ago – the verse that says:

“Desiring to lower her standards

They watch every move that she makes

They long to find fault in her teaching

But truly she makes no mistakes”.

Reminds ME of a Church I converted to J

Gotta run, they are playing “Keep on the Firing Line” and I have to sing along.

How can their be a discussion about Southern Gospel and no one mention Elvis Presley he was a terrific gospel singer - he is in the gosple hall of fame by the way. He took extreme chances in his career as a young rock star to record gospel music which wasn’t popular back then. But RCA didn’t object when they was the record sales of gospel records were as good or better than his other alblums. They actually hold up rather well even better than his pop-rock music.

Hi kage_ar,

You mean there is a category called Catholic Southern Gospel Music? I’d like to hear some of these artists.

I have only come across it that one time - we walked into Mass, and there was a small poster stating that we had special guests - they sang during the offetory, and then did some singing after Mass. I was very new in the Parish - it was a few years ago - and I did not get the name 😦

I’ve heard every other kind of Catholic Music, heavy metal, Pop, Rap, Hip Hop, Chant and all things in between - but, only once true Southern Gospel Quartet Music. Maybe I should look at starting one 🙂

For the Elvis fans, my brother works with the Jordanaires - just finished a recording session with them!

kage_ar,

Are any of your father’s records still available for purchase?

Gene

Dad has not recorded for many years, but, if you PM me your mailing address - I’ll be happy to burn you some CDs of his older recordings. I have some from 40+ years ago!
