I mainly read the New Jerusalem Bible and the Douay Rheims Bible but I have recently been given a copy of the K.J.V and I was wondering if there are any Catholics who read this Bible?

I too have a KJV. As a matter of fact I have three. On occasion I do read it for comparative analysis purposes.

I have a NKJV that I usually use. But I also have a DR bible. The one problem I have with the DR bible is that the psalms are different. There’s still 150 of them, but around the 10th one, it’s combined with another. Later there is one made into two so that there’s still the 150. Rather confusing to me.

The Douay-Rheims psalms follow that of the Latin Vulgate and most modern translations follow the King James

I grew up protestant, so I’m use to that numbering of psalms. So it’s confusing to me when I try to read the psalms from the DR. 😦

I do. But I also read the Jerusalem Bible (the one without inclusive language), the NAB, and the Douay-Rheimes (with Haydock Commentary).

I read the KJV sometimes. I have a KJV with Apocrypha published by Cambridge, so it has all the books.

I love reading the Authorized (King James) Version. I think the AV is much better to read than the 1991 New American Bible. I wish there was a AV with the Apocrypha/Deuterocanonical Books.

Love the KJV, although for real in-depth study I use the New Jerusalem Bible.
I just like the poetry of the King James Version, it is so lyrical!

The Douay-Rheims is basically that. Actually, the KJV is the D-R with the Deuterocanon removed.

I like the NJB too.

I agree. I especially like the Psalms in the KJV. The verse in my signature line is from the KJV.

Yes, I know. I’d just prefer the D-R because I’m a bitter ex-KJV Only Baptist. 😉
I like the D-R also. I prefer it more than the KJV except for the Psalms. I like the Psalms in the KJV better than in any other translation.
That’s quite expensive!
All of my Bibles are expensive. I like leather bound Bibles. There is a hardcover edition of that Bible available. I just gave the link to the one I own.

I know bibles can get expensive. My DR is hardbound, but definately cost enough. I also have “the New catholic answers” NAB. I keep in near my computer in case I need to look something up. I got the index tabs with it so it’s easier to deal with.

I have the index tabs on my RSV-CE. Getting those on the Bible usually makes it cost about $5-10 more.

The Douay-Rheims psalms follow that of the Latin Vulgate and most modern translations follow the King James
To expand on this, the Douay-Rheims and the Vulgate follow the Septuagint reckoning while the KJV and most modern translations follow the Masoretic.

We happen to have two KJV Bibles in our home, so when Hubby and I are doing a Bible Study together, we take turns reading from the KJV aloud - it’s easier to follow along. Besides, I often like the word choices in the KJV. However, I always keep my NRSV opened and read aloud any differences. We also have 2 other Bibles we use as well.

So, yes we read KJV but that’s not the only one.

So, you all agree that the KJV is a reliable translation? I was concerned that the translators may have been biased; they may have deliberately chosen words to convey protestant doctrine. However, based on what you all have written, I will read the KJV along with my Douay and New Jerusalem Study Bible.
