I have started to realise recently that my desire for personal space is quite a selfish one. I spend too much money on my apartment, and I was considering a vocation to the Carthusians, who live as hermits.
Many of the ruined abbeys and convents around the UK have spaces that used to be the dormitory where many monks would live together in rows of beds. Sometimes it was only the lay brothers who lived this way, which would be fine for me because I don’t feel called to be a priest. Do any religious orders or communities still have such a set-up? It might do me good to renounce my private space for the sake of living for others.
