Do any Orders still live in dormitories?

I have started to realise recently that my desire for personal space is quite a selfish one. I spend too much money on my apartment, and I was considering a vocation to the Carthusians, who live as hermits.

Many of the ruined abbeys and convents around the UK have spaces that used to be the dormitory where many monks would live together in rows of beds. Sometimes it was only the lay brothers who lived this way, which would be fine for me because I don’t feel called to be a priest. Do any religious orders or communities still have such a set-up? It might do me good to renounce my private space for the sake of living for others.

Living arrangements can very, with some orders having college like dorms while others might live in bedroom like quarters. The best way to find out the living arrangements of a specific community is to schedule a visit. The Benedictines in Shawnees, OK live in what looks like your normal college dorm while the Franciscan Friars of the Renewal in their Ft. Worth, TX friary are living in what looks like a house, but is an old unused convent.

I highly suggest making a visit to a community and seeing what it’s like there. Many offer weekend retreats and vocations visits. If you like the community, ask yourself if it feels like home. In a way, it’s a lot like looking for a university, only the stay is much longer, and the rewards are much deeper.

Thanks,

Sorry, when I said dormitories, I meant like several monks in one room, more like an old-fashined army barracks or something. I don’t know if any orders still do this.

I don’t know of any that do the barracks style but that’s not to say there aren’t some. If you’ve seen the movie, “Into Great Silence” you will notice that these Carthusians each have their own cell.

I recently visited one order - they have 2 postulants living in the same room.

None that I know of personally.

That would be interesting to see though 😃
