Why not? It’s not tied into going to church. Bonuses are just part of the way pay packages are structured.

I was about to say, it’s pretty much in the hands of the payroll office: they pretty much give them out regardless of what religion their employees are. Last I knew, it wasn’t standard for most businesses to ask you what your religion is, on your application or during your job interview.

I’m curious…
I’m fairly sure they do, as do (non-Orthodox) Jews, Muslims, Hindus, Buddhists, and others. I know Orthodox Jews who do not attend business Christmas parties and wonder whether they accept Christmas bonuses if the bonuses are called such. My guess is they do.

I just went to a company Christmas party at an IT firm where over half of the people there, including the company owner were Hindu. And yes, everyone got bonuses. In fact, all of the Hindus celebrated Christmas in a secular way because they saw the tree, presents, music, Santa, etc as just another part of American culture. Christmas isn’t just for Christians anymore.

And besides, giving out bonuses on the basis of religion would be discriminatory and illegal.

My wife’s company calls it an “end of the year” bonus…

But they can’t call it a Christmas bonus. Maybe they could call it an Xmas bonus?

There is a lot of misunderstanding about Xmas. Xmas is actually an abbrevaition for Christ and isn’t meant to remove him from the word. “Xmas” cards were actually quite common in the earlier part of the 20th century.

And if the people that are abbreviating it are doing so with this knowledge I am the president of the USA…

That’s actually common knowledge.

Besides, when was the last time that you ever heard anyone encourage spelling Xmas so as not to offend non-Christians? You don’t, because it isn’t some made-up PC thing. And Christians abbreviate it that way just as often as non-Christians. Laziness knows no religious bounds;)

They’re not strictly tied in to faith, they are more end-of-year bonuses that reward performance during the year at work. Christmas just happens to be the time of year when they’re given out (convenient because most people are on holiday between Christmas and New Year anyways).

As such, I’d certainly accept one even if I weren’t Christian.

Look, the average texter who text merry Xmas has NO clue about any sort of ancient spelling of Chirst. none. It is silly to suggest that those who abbreviate X mas do so out of some intellectual muscle flexing about ancient languages…

No, they do it because its easier. But no one does it to “Take the ‘Christ’ out of Christmas”. It isn’t a sign of disrespect, just shorthand. (Nor is it modern text-speak)

And if asked most people could tell you where that came from.

You are lucky to have such educated friends:D.

Yes, I agree with BlueEyedLady. All of the people I know (even those of a non-christian religion) are aware of this. 🤷

Ancient language? It’s Greek. The speeling of Christ in Greek hasn’t changed the last millennia as far as I know.
Have a look at the ornaments of your church. Surely there is a XP somewhere. And that’s no PC operating system but a Greek chi (χ) and a rho (ρ) = Chr(ist).
Btw, don’t you use Greek letters in math classes?
