I grew up Baptist. It seems to me that there are as many Baptists who hate Catholics as there are Catholics who hate Baptists.
Some people are just ugly like that.
Some people are just ugly like that.
Hmmm, I was unaware of this. Odd.What baffles me is that they say that alcohol is a sin.
It’s sad, but yes, even baptists are human.Gluttony is one of the seven deadly sins. Not to be disrespectful, but a lot of Baptists are morbidly obese.
To be fair, Baptist in the south have a long history of anti-Catholicism - think of the KKK (whom were predominantly Baptist) and the know-nothings. Thankfully, this is not the apparent case in our recent history, although… I still feel that anti-Catholicism is still somewhat ingrained in the southern culture. I experienced this culturally ingrained mentality this past weekend when I went to East Texas to visit my In-Laws.I grew up Baptist. More like “to be unfair”. I have never seen any hatred towards catholics. To be fair, Baptist in the south have a long history of anti-Catholicism - think of the KKK (whom were predominantly Baptist) and the know-nothings. I honestly don’t feel that they understand why they hate Catholics - they only know that “this is the way it has always been around here”.
Also, I don’t feel that they hate me; but I know that they hate the fact that I am Catholic.
I haven’t really found many Catholics whom “hate” baptist; or any “hate groups” that are mainly Catholic and go around targeting Baptist and doing anything like some of the above said groups have done in the past and. I find that someone could easily get the impression that baptist do hate Catholics - or at least, are unusually concerned about our salvation -, and this is not the case for Catholics who might hate Baptist.
You are right though, hate is truly an ugly word.
I am not sure how I was being unfair; would you deny that there has been anti-Catholic sentiments among Southern Baptist in the past? While I would say, that this fact has declined in recent years it is* NOT *gone by any stretch of the imagination. I could make a pretty lengthy list of not only “hate groups”, but also anti-Catholic Baptist “churches”, whom are bent on letting everyone know how they feel about Catholicism. Could you provide the same if I asked?More like “to be unfair”. I have never seen any hatred towards Catholics.
This is unusual, and certainly not the norm, although,I have been, personally, on the recieving end of “catholic” hatred towards Christians that don’t go to their church.
I just have to assume (hope) that the men involved weren’t really representative of catholic Christians.
is somewhat ambiguous. Did they burn a cross in front of your church? Spray paint graffiti all on your sanctuary, stating that we (Catholics) worship the anti-Christ? Whatever they might have done, you would be correct in your statement that they do not represent the Church.“hatred towards Christians that don’t go to their church”
Are you talking about protestants, baptists, or southern baptists? I’m speaking specifically about churches that are members of the SBC.I am not sure how I was being unfair; would you deny that there has been anti-Catholic sentiments among Southern Baptist in the past? I have dealt with this sentiment every time I am around my wife’s parents and her siblings. They are constantly biting their tongue when they walk in my home, they have refused to attend our wedding - if it was Catholic, they refused to attend their own grand children’s Baptisms, Confirmations, or first Holy Communion; although, interestingly, they also have invited us to attend services at their church, and expect us to go…Recently, my wife’s nephew was “Saved” and is a zealot for Christ, which is all well and good; although, before we went to East Texas this past time, to celebrate his new found faith, I was asked by my wife’s parents, my wife’s brother, and his wife not to speak to him at all about “the Church” or Sacred Scriptures or really anything… with a threat that they would ostracize our family if I had.
Like I have mentioned, I don’t feel that they “hate” me, but I do know that they “hate” that I am Catholic.

I realize that the Baptist Church can not be painted with a broad brush, there may even be saintly Baptist of some certain community. But from where I stand, here in the great state of Texas, the Baptist Church - among other communities - seems definitively against anything Catholic. Which, due to that said fact, some Baptist have an entrenched disdain for the Holy Mother Church, and those whom are within her bosom. This can be easily proven with little effort, if you are intrested. It is a fact that there are many communities within the Baptist Church that are certainly anti-Catholic, which breeds hate. At least, that is the way it is here in Texas.
Just Google “Do Catholics Hate Baptist?” and glace over the results… it is enlightening.
Southern Baptist type? Care to elaborate?southern Baptist type
read the complete sentence,Southern Baptist type? Care to elaborate?
I am talking about Baptist whom live in the southern united states - generally. It is difficult to know what Baptist church is affiliated with what organisation. When I leave my home, and travel 10 miles in any direction, I will pass at least 5 Baptist churches. I would hope that they are all at least somewhat on the same page as far as how they see other Christians, Catholics specifically. Are you talking about protestants, baptists, or southern baptists? I’m speaking specifically about churches that are members of the SBC.
I will not speak for other organizations.
By the way: It is terrible that your own family won’t love and support you the way they should.
It’s really too bad that you paint with such a broad brush.
I was raised Southern Baptist and now I am very interested in converting. I am doing my studying and starting RCIA next month but I just wanted to say that your last sentence is exactly on point. I heard that same thing more times than I can count about Mary. And the MAIN reason I was so hard headed for 10 YEARS to even listening to my own husbands views. He is Cathoilic (well non-practicing…long story). When his family would pray at Christmas to Mary I would sit quitely and hum a song in my head. But why??? Because I was raised to believe it was wrong. Never did I think for myself. Also for the ones who would talk about you behind your back but be pleasent to your face. I know them. Maybe I was one? Guess I was one. Because I BELIEVED what most Southern Baptist believes. But never could I be rude or mean to anyone. If a conversation about Catholics came up I would say things I had heard and was taught like I knew for a fact. But never torwards one person. More like torwards the religion. But I have always felt in my heart that as long as they were saved and believed in God then who was I to judge? I guess I have always questioned my religion and was to scared to do anything about it so I just went with it. Shame on me.read the complete sentence,
Actually where I come from, (near Chattanooga TN) I much rather have an extreme fundamentalist say it to my face, then a sweet “Bless your heart” southern Baptist
**type who mocks you and the Catholic Church behind your back **
if you are not that type then there is nothing to concern with.
I was not sterotyping all Southern Baptists, just the ones who will sweetly say something to your face and later talk about you behind your back.
I have some very good friends who are Southern Baptists, I respect their religion and they respect mine. But when someone calls you and your whole family “a bunch of pagan Mary worshippers” behind your back, that is unacceptable.
First, Welcome Home Casey. I will have you in my prayers, and I hope and I will pray that you will find all the knowledge that you need on your journey. To the post a few post up about Southern Baptist being Obese. Guess it is the southern cooking. Sunday dinners after church to talk about church. Maybe it has to do with the majority of Southern people are Baptist and that why the majority of Baptist is obese? I find that interesting. Religion has no affect on weight. Its food and sometimes medical. I think it has something to do with location and nothing to do with religion!!!
In fairness, there are few Catholics, who also act quite smug and superior, I’ve heard the quips about “Bible in one hand, gun in the other” “How can you tell the Bible belongs to a Baptist…smells like fried chicken” and there’s the old Baptist in a liquor store joke.I was raised Southern Baptist and now I am very interested in converting.
