Do Catholic priests have the authority to forgive sins on earth?

This is my point. Anyone can “speak” the words, but that does not follow that the speaking carries any authority with it; or any power with it.
The problem is that there is no speech, i.e. no forgiveness of sins, without the lungs, and the lungs are human.

If you believe Paul’s teaching about the Body of Christ, then you are Catholic or Orthodox. If you write it off as symbolic, then you are a Protestant.

This is my point. Anyone can “speak” the words, but that does not follow that the speaking carries any authority with it; or any power with it. Only Jesus has the power and authority to forgive sins, because of His Sacrifice.
That is true, Protestant. However, Jesus very clearly delegates this authority to His human ambassadors of reconciliation. Otherwise, you’d have to explain away John 20:23… which, unfortunately, many Protestants seem to be experts at.

Why are there many highly educated, devout Catholics "scattering " out of Catholicism ?
There aren’t. It goes the other way. People leave Catholicsm largely because they are ignorant of the faith. Devout Catholics rarely leave. Most people who are baptized Catholic that leave are LOOKING for a more “devout” (authentic spiritual expereince).
That is ,why with your unity and perfect “system” do you still have Catholic believers come to different beliefs on the pope or what is being born again etc ?
Not sure what a"system" you refer to here.

Catholics who refuse to receive the Apostolic faith preserved infallibly through the Church may come to “different beliefs”. What has happpened is that they have become Protestant, and they don’t realize it. Later, when an bible christian comes along and “proves” from the Bible that the Catholic Church is wrong, it is easy for them to leave.
There are only 2 or 3 ways to interpret Peter being a rock .or two ways to interpret forgiving sins. There are not thousands of views on this…There was much unity early on in the church , because things were simpler and in their origins .Just like Judaism was simple for Abraham ,and become more complicated with Moses ,and by the time of Jesus you had differing views -yet they were still “Jews”
Yes, it was simplier. The more heresies arose, the more defining of the faith was needed.

I don’t think those who depart from the faith can still be considered “Jews”. Remember, Jesus told the Pharisees that they were “of your father, the devil”.
We have different views even sects ,but we are still “Christian”.Did you know all Christians were united in celebrating Easter .No one cared when you celebrated it ,just as long as you did .There was unity .Then came along a pope and caused division by forcing ALL Christians to celebrate on his chosen date ,even if it was against apostolic tradition of other churches. That is not the unity christ called for .
This is a simplified and inaccruate reflection of the problem of Easter. However, I agree, that the unity Christ wants to does suffer many wounds.
That is only one example of forcing unity unnecessarily ,causing division. Catholic list of "how to"s probably closely matched the quantity of how to’s for the Pharisees of Jesus’s time. When you bring it down to the basics ,there are not thoudands of divisions .You have several branches in Catholicism . Orthodoxy has several, and Protestantism six or seven.
There are thousands of divisions. If you don’t realize this,t hen you have not studied the splintering caused after the Reformation.

There cannot be an “branches”, though. We all are to be connected to the root, which is christ. he is our one vine.
Yes ,discern all things including diversity ,unity, but you can not use that to stop discerning every other big or little dogma that comes your way on IT"S OWN MERIT. Just because you believe you are "united "obediently does not relinquish your responsibility for discerning ALL things in YOUR Church .
I agree, but the unity of the Church comes from adherance to the Truth. The gift of infallibilty belongs to the Church, not the individual. Individuals can benefit from it to the extent that we remain in unity with Truth.
Just because you see our disunity in disobedience does not relinquish your responsibility to ANY truth we may put forward , by God’s grace .
I’m fraid you lost me here David. Were you quoting someone else here?

Are you suggesting that God’s grace is going to put forward Truth through disunity and disobedienc?
After all ,did God not use the uncircumcised Philistines or Babylonians for the GOOD of Israel ?
God does use the ungodly toward His purpose. But His chose to reveal His Truth through the One Church He established prior to His ascention.

david ruiz;7433488:
Again you are mistaken.
The Church is not mistaken on rather Mary was assumed up to heaven, they never had to declare that dogma until it was questioned many years later. It was always believed before that.
Agree, it was believed before that. Disagree: as soon as it was believed ,there was disagreement. At least not everyone believed it. When do you think disagreement came ?

Authority of scripture? Scripture is ONE source of authority, not THE final authority.
Yes ,you did not say authority of scripture as the culprit rather full reliance on it or Sola Scriptura.

Code:
]This is very trivial , and unimportant except that it answers you daring question: early Church Father , author of the Latin bible used for 1000 years, said of Mary, mother of Jesus ,that "of her end no one knows" .This in contrast to those saying she "Assumed "up to heaven, and sits on her co-redemptrix throne, eventually declared dogma about 1600 years later.
I think you may have misunderstood the footnote, David. It is a reference to her passing from this life. There has never been an official definition on whther or not she died, or was taken up. In the East, her passing is referred to as “dormition”, because the Church has always believed she was taken, body and soul, by her beloved Son.

Some speculated that, since she did not suffer original sin, that she also did not suffer the consequence of physical death.

The Church, if you mean The Roman Catholic Church, cannot prove that only they have the “authority” to interpret scripture. Everyone has the privilege, not the authority, to interpret scripture.
OK, then let’s leave the CC out of it for the moment. I ask again, and if you don’t want to answer the question, that’s cool:

As far as interpreting scripture, who, on earth, was entrusted with the authority to do it?

Yes of course ,but tell that to those who were threatened with excommunication if they did no comply with Rome on this,at least in Rome (Pope Victor). Still , why try to enforce customs, is that where our unity lies ?
This is a good point. It has been a problem throughout the history of the Church. Some people confuse Sacred Tradtiion with customs, and it does cause divisions (power struggling over it). Some of the worst of them are between the East and West, where bickering had nothing to do with doctrine, but just customs, like clothing, hair, beards, etc. Human beings can be so myopic at times.
Well, then how about the Immaculate Conception ,a custom practiced or venerated differently ,and at different times, which then became required dogma.
The all Holy nature of Mary has always been a doctrine of the faith, though you are right, it is celebrated differently in different cultures.

It had to be proclainmed a dogma in the West because of heresies that were rampant following the Reformation.

Many people are baptised Catholic and that is the end of it.
Protestsnats have similar problem.
Any Catholic that truly studies and truly understands his faith would never leave the faith.
This is said a lot .I fell the same way . Anyone truly born-again will not go back to a non-evangelical church. But as for your statement ,I disagree.People who do understand and study Catholic faith do leave, even nuns and priests.
Although Luther had many gifts he somehow got lost and turned away from his faith. But it is sad because he was very educated in the faith.
Thank-you for being honest that he was educated in the faith, with gifts.
And I know nothing about revelations that come to you while in a Catholic mold as you say it.
But no revelations that go against the teaching of Christ come from Christ that I know for sure.
True ! True! True!
The Church teaches that there is no revelation,
False.
Jesus did it all, and told us all. Everything we need to know was revealed to us by Christ
.True ,but he continues today thru the ministry of the Holy Spirit. He did not set things up ,like winding a clock ,to then step aside and watch. It is as he were still here,as with the apostles ,but even more so.
Why would scripture tell us not to turn away from our faith and teachings of the Church, and then turn around and write as Luther did? Luther was a fallen Catholic the moment he did what he did.

We all have free will to believe and do as we please. But there is a big difference to believe and do as we please and follow God and his teachings. That is where you either follow the teaching of the Church or you follow yourself.

Because there can only be ONE TRUTH. If not what would make my truth any more truth then your truth??? As you can see it would not and could not work, and time has shown not only could it or would it not work it HAS not worked.

Everyone has the privilege, not the authority, to interpret scripture.
This is true, but to be understood with some nuance.

Only the CC, who preserved the Scriptures and is its guardian, has the authority to be the final interpreter.

However, all Christians are exhorted to read, and interpret, the Sacred Scriptures.

Here’s an example: I’m planning a dinner party for 40 people and I’m stressing out about food preparation. Before the party I decide to go to Adoration, and before the Blessed Sacrament I open the Word randomly to the story of Jesus and the Multiplication of the Loaves.

I am certainly free to interpret that verse as, “Don’t worry, PR! I will take care of you! No one will go away from your home hungry.”

However, we must interpret Scripture according to the faith by which it was written (Catholic).

You believe this, too. You would not affirm a Biblical scholar who reads Scripture and concludes, “I interpret verse (A) to mean that there are many gods.” You would propose that he must interpret Scripture according to the faith by which it was written, right?

Again ,differing opinions occurred from the beginning (Tertullian /Jerome example), not just 1600 years later. Secondly , "separated" does not always apply to differing views. Many formed these views while deep within the One faith.
Yes, we can see in the NT there have been “differing ideas” from the beginning. And, to the extent that these were divergent from the One Faith, they were considered heresies.

Even heresies formed by some one deep within the One Faith are still heresies. There are some areas where we can exercise a divergence of opinion, but not on the doctrines of the faith. Jerome submitted al his work to the authority of the Church.
were we dead ended with priest /forgiving?
It always boils down to authority, does it not?

I am amazed that you deny apostolic succession in the Scriptures and the early fathers.
How about this ,I will only quote Michael Walsh
a Roman Catholic historian,in his book"the Lives of Popes page 20 hard cover- " (Mt 16:18) - a saying which has been interpreted in the Catholic Church since the third century to provide Scripture warrant for the primacy of the Pope as the successor of Peter", end quote. This corroborates Protestant historians who say the scripture was unused ,and not a teaching of 1st ,2nd century church interpretation.
There are a couple problems with this. One is that no 'warrant" is necessary. Peter was appointed by Christ, and served in his role for almost 20 years before the first books of the NT even began to be written. And the reason there was no need to emphasize the meaning of that scripture prior to the 3rd century is because no one ever questioned the primacy of the role of the successor of Peter.
Yes ,first among equals ,one of the twelve stone foundations of the church ,per revelation.End.
Yes, but Peter was given some gifts and duties that were not given to others.
The rebuttal is of course, the Church can not err, due to previous “traditional” interpretation of such a thing( not erring) .
The inerrancy of the Church is not based upon interpretation of anything, but upon her Divine elements. She has as her Head the Lord Jesus, and the HS as her Soul. It is these divine elements that make her infallible.
And who said Protestants have self-serving dogma ?
To the extent Protestants depart from the Apostolic faith, the dogma is self serving. During the Reformation, they separated from the Catholic Church in an effort to develop a more pure religion. They were disgusted by the practices of corrupt Catholic Clergy and wanted a faith that reflected the fruits that pure faith should produce. The developed dogmas they believed would produce that, such as SS.
True ,but not all- John gospel and revelation s ,and Acts may have been written 1 year before Peters death ,certainly when death was eminent for Paul and others ,and perhaps Peter.Yet no mention of a plan of succession
Well, we read them differently, don’t we? The succession was well underway already by that time. The “plan of succession” is part of the Sacred Tradition.
Because as said earlier ,of what do we mean, and what did Paul mean by tradition , and why would it be much different from scripture ,and the same problem Jesus had with tradition , the assumption of it’s truth and validity.
No, Paul was writing about Sacred Tradition. Surely you dont’ think he was commanding the following of human customs, do you?

Jesus had no problem with human customs either, except when they interefere with God’s Laws.

It sounds like you don’t really believe God can, or does, preserve His Word where He sends it (in this case, in the Church).

when was he fallen ? The 93 things ,most of em minor / He still felt very catholic .Was it when he was given no scriptural evidence ,for minor dogmas /practices ,other than Papal decrees and synods-perhaps .
We all have free will to believe and do as we please. But there is a big difference to believe and do as we please and follow God and his teachings. That is where you either follow the teaching of the Church or you follow yourself.
Do you really think I do as I please ? That I follow myself ? Are all of your churches teachings God’s teachings ?
Because there can only be ONE TRUTH. If not what would make my truth any more truth then your truth??? As you can see it would not and could not work, and time has shown not only could it or would it not work it HAS not worked.
God has always allowed competing “truths” to be along side the One Truth, to test every individual. A person has not died to himself, nor really desired God until he says , “Lord, I don’t care anymore for anything , whether Protestant, or Catholic, or Orthodox, but that you show me, as you showed Peter thru the myriad of possibilities, cause I thought I knew , and trusted in that, but now let me truly trust in you, the Good Shepherd ,faithful to lead into all righteousness. Let your chips fall where they may, even if it means becoming a protestant ,or orthodox ,or a better catholic.”

We both have scripture to further know .Your scriptures gives you four "marks" , as we have our "marks" also . What is Holy ? What is Apostolic ? What is One? What is Universal ? Round and round we go with different answers and revelations.
There is no need to go round and round. Once a person accepts what was handed down by the Apostles, it is very simple. 😃

I know what you mean, though. Many concepts of doctrine and faith had to be redefined by the Reformers in order to effect the separation from Catholicism.
I fully claim ,as you do, the four marks, just differently. Again, "What hath God really said ? "
More importantly, does your God contradict what He already revealed "once for all " to the saints?
Just gotta have the right divine revelation to get apostolic truth. They did not do away with “revelation”,and scripture guidance.
I agree. Concepts were redefined, and some were jettisoned all together. A new form of “divine revelation” was crafted to meet the needs of the time.
Crux of your error .This had some validity in the first century , just before final scripture was written , AND you had a living apostle, But thereafter to now, with the foundation laid, we have God’s written Word to submit to ,and each other as fellow believers, and yes, with deacons.
Where in the Scripture does it say that the Authority Christ gave to the Church ceased when part of it was written down? Where does it say that what is written in scripture about the Apostolic succession would no longer be valid after the NT was written?
But do you see my order ? Your order is church ,church ,church , and of course His Word .
Well, it isn’t “my” order, it is His. He is the one who set it up to work that way.
Yes, He leads the Church , His Body , you and me, into all truth by divine revelation as to what is Scripture and it’s meaning, and what really is apostolic tradition.
Such a statement rests upon a deficient definition off the Church.

The Church is evident by those who are in unity with the successors of the apostles.

Why would God reveal to moderns and understanding of Scripture that was contrary to what He already revealed to the Church?
Revelations and the seven letters from Jesus is evidence of this and His method .
Had you considered who those letters are addressed to?

I started a thread with the hopes of correctly representing SS, but there doesn’t seem to be one definition of SS. So, the HS guides you to believe one thing about confession and me to believe the exact opposite?

I want to know the truth from the spirit of truth (the HS). How can I ascertain the truth about this teaching?
A quick story .A young Chinamen when to the old sage and said ," I want to know truth". The sage took him to a nearby river, and they waded in . The sage then took the young lad and held him under water , and continued to do so . The young lad held out as long as he could and after a fierce struggle, was allowed up , desperately gasping for air. The wise man asked ,"What is it that you wanted when I continued to hold you under ? " The young lad answered, "Just one thing finally. I wanted AIR ! " .“Good ! Now, when you want truth the same way, you shall find it”, said the sage.

Well, plenty of customs were eradicated. We see plenty of evidence in the NT how Jewish customs were not applied to Gentiles.

There are no deposits of faith that are from Tradition ?
I am not sure I understand this question. Sacred Tradition, along with Sacred Scripture are considered One Deposit of Faith…
Jesus never taught IC to apostles.
Well, we don’t have a written record of that teaching but Scripture was never intended to include everything in the first place. We don’t have a record of what Paul taught for 2 years at the temple of Tyrannus, either, but clearly he did.
No evidence that apostles taught it
On the contrary, it is contained in virutally all the liturgies and prayers of every community founded by an Apostle.

Fortunately no one but you are bound by your own “classifications”. 😃

I am really attempting to understand things from your perspective Dave.

So, from the point of view of each respective church, in the world today, they too are right, in my opinion, which means no one is wrong, and yet truth remains elusive regarding certain doctrinal beliefs, such as the sacrament of confession. From that perspective, (the holy spirit guides each respective church) - it does not sound like Jesus left the world with a universal way for all Christians, regardless of denomination, to know the truth regarding certain teachings, such as confession or the Eucharist. Is that a believable assessment?

Do you agree with the following:

As a former non-Catholic, I eventually learned the canon of Scripture was determined by the CC councils, which it included the Deuterocanonicals.

The CC via council, defined the 2 Natures of Christ: dogmatized in 451 at the Council of Chalcedon. Further controversies over whether Christ had one of two wills ensued, and this went on for a few centuries more.

The CC via council, defined original sin, which is not found in scripture: this was finalized in dogma so late that it wasn’t even part of the Nicene Creed; the ECF’s wrote much more about purgatory than original sin.

Most non-Catholics embrace the preceding 3 teachings. Why trust that the CC, via council got it right about them and disbelieve that the CC got it right about things such as purgatory and the sacrament of confession?

I am not trying to be slippery; I am just looking for a viable answer. These are simply questions that bothered me long ago.
Just quicky it’s late --you deserve better but A church can start out on fire and grow cold ,and many other scenarios .read the Letters to the seven churches in revelations. As you must know , this is not a problem to protestants. The church began well , kept some things well ,changed a few things , added a few things , with voices of reform at most every step .Reform is perfect example of Christ keeping his promise to be with us to the end. But the seven churches is a good start.

What does Jesus tell you ? He is alive and well , is He not ? Can He not enlighten you to what scripture says , to what nature says , to what this or that church says , to what fellow “Christians” say ? Jesus may say, “What is that to you if the church down the street have has not just neglected your church , my Words , but also my guidance and possibly Me, as a Savior and Lord, a million dollar mistake ,compared to missing out on a part of righteousness(abortion) ?”
He will not “enlighten” an individual contrary to what He has already revealed to the Church.

And “missing out on a part of righteousness” is very serious. One cannot be “in Christ” when one gets outside of righteousness. This is one of the most poisonous fruits of departure from the Truth. If one thinks one can reject “a part of righteousness” and there are no consequences, then more “parts” will get rejected until rightousness is no longer recognizeable. The One Faith is a seamless garment, all or nothing. We are not at liberty to pick and choose which actions we define as sins, and which we do not. This is God;s perogative, not ours.
Is that the fault of Sola Scriptura ?
Yes. That and a seared conscience and a culture of death.
Code:
Is that the fault of God speaking ? Cain and Abel disagreed . Is that the fault of God speaking ?
The good news is that indeed that you and I know they are wrong because of scripture, revealed to our hearts by the Holy Spirit. They may have scripture , but not an unction from the Holy Ghost . It has nothing to do with aspiring to scripture as authoratative. That they misuse scripture ,does not taint scripture.

Yes and no. It has everything to do wiht aspiring to use Scripture as authority.

You see, the main reason that it cannot be used this way is because people misuse the Scriptures. The Scriptures say this about themselves. That is why Jesus gave authority to people.

OK, then let’s leave the CC out of it for the moment. I ask again, and if you don’t want to answer the question, that’s cool:

As far as interpreting scripture, who, on earth, was entrusted with the authority to do it?
No one. God is His own interpreter, thru the Holy Spirit. He talks to us .Are we not spiritual beings ? Did He not walk and talk with Adam in the garden ? Did Adam need an interpreter ? Do we not have the same because of the second Adam and Eve ,in Christ, the same privelege and phenomenem ? Of talking with Him ? Is not this in our tradition and bibles ? Can you imagine , God speaks to you and you say , no, no don’t speak to me but tell it to me thru Peter and or His successor. To make sure you are not off your rocker , The Holy Spirit will confirm with His written Word.
