Do Catholics despise Anglicans?

Irish Catholics pretty much despise the Anglican Church. As the official state Church of England, the Anglican Church was directly invovled in the eviction of tenant farmers, stealing of land, forced tithing upon the Catholic community even during the great famine that killed 1/3rd of the Irish population (and they weren’t even Anglicans)… The Anglican Church desecrated the bodies of the Saints, burnt the monasteries, and killed the priests…
Did they? I didn’t know that
If you live in a community with a lot of Irish who still have roots in Ireland, or even English Catholics you will find a lot of hatred for the Anglican Church
I am sorry but I must disagree with you 😦

I live in a community with a lot of Irish roots and I [nor so far as I am aware any other Irish Catholic] do not despise anyone, much less so our separated brethren where the emphasis is on ‘brethren’ not ‘seperated’. 🙂

As for ordination of gays and lesbians, not in my Anglican church!! My priest and parish vehimately opposes it. Much of TEC condones these things but may soon find themselves no longer a part of the Anglican communion.
The problem is that this is really not the case. Your parish may be against ordination of practicing homosexuals, maybe even your bishop and diocese. Still, as you noted elsewhere, your parish is an Episcopal Church parish.

The Episcopal Church itself most certainly has embraced the ordination of practicing homosexuals and–in my humble opinion which I pray to God is wrong–the Episcopal Church will not back down on the issue. That being the case, you will continue to face the quandary of being a member of an hierarchical Church in apostolic succession which proudly trumpets the fact that it is “open” and “loving” and “mature” enough to ordain practicing homosexual men and women to the priesthood and episcopacy.

At that time, your options will be limited…see if your parish is willing to leave and, if so, you are willing to fight for your property or not. See if your diocese is willing to leave…very unlikely. Strike out on your own again. All lousy alternatives to a lousy situation.

Sincerely,

It seems to me that Catholics seem to have more of a disliking for The Anglican Communion than for anyone else, even Lutherans. Why is this?
I’m Catholic and did not realize I was disliking Anglicans. Never even thought of such rubbish.

While it may occur in your community, it is not a widespread and prevalent disliking.

While not wishing to appear insensitive to the issue, anyone who finds the Catholic position intollerable, can at least find respite within Episcopalian.

Is that necessarily a bad thing?

“Anyone who finds the Catholic position intollerable”? Did I miss something? What intolerable Catholic position are you referring to?

Catholicism does not accept homosexuality, and obvert homosexuality is morally reprehensible to Catholics, and I assume to others, although, ‘ordaining’ obvert homosexuals may be the case with American Episcopalians.

Today is the Feast of the Holy Name of Mary.

Hail Mary, full of grace, pray for us.

It seems to me that Catholics seem to have more of a disliking for The Anglican Communion than for anyone else, even Lutherans. Why is this? Is is because the Anglican reformers in the 16th century kept most of the RC form of worship when they split from Rome? Is it because of King Henry or Queen Elizabeth II? Or possibly could it be that Anglicans actually profess the Eucharist to be exactly what RC’s believe that it is?
I don’t believe despising people is a Catholic teaching.

I agree with you. I certainly do not despise Anglicans. What I do despise about the faith is that they try to claim that they are Catholic, when in reality they are not. That part bothers me.

I didn’t say I don’t love them as people though. 👍

As a former Episcopalian I can honestly say I Never felt any undue animosity towards my religion from Catholics. However, there is nothing more evil than saying "we are just like Catholics"when in fact other than the outer crust there is nothing whatever that resembles the Catholic church. There is a real movement within the Episcopal church to call ones self “Anglo-Catholic” (I confess l am guilty of that very thing). There is nothing that irks me more than that comment. You ain’t Catholic! It is an admission by that person that they are a) seeking the truth and b) recognize the Truth lies within the Catholic church.By experience those people will soon be Catholic. Bottom line, I have Never met an Episcopalian that I harbored any real disdain for-that is reserved for the Episcopal church itself!

Ronnok:

As you say, it may be that Anglicans profess the Eucharist to be what RC’s believe it is. Many Anglicans, however, don’t believe in the Real Presence.

However, Anglicans don’t have a valid Episcopacy or Priesthood. Therefore, their liturgy is incapable of producing the same Eucharist as is in Catholicism. They can profess what they want; what they have is an entirely different matter. What they have is bread and wine, not the Body and Blood of the Lord Jesus.

As far as disliking Anglicans or Lutherans…I as a Catholic don’t think about them very much, and so it is not a matter of liking them or disliking them. It is a irrevelant non-issue. Do you have any surveys to support your view?

Maybe a person has to be a Protestant, like you, to have these feelings.

I now dispute the thesis: catholics dispise Anglicans:

If you do minimal research on the Internet, you will find books and articles about Anti-Catholicism:
  1. “The new AntiCatholicism: the last acceptable prejudice” by Philip Jenkins
  2. “Anti-Catholicism in America” by Mark Massa.
  3. You will find a long article in Wikipedia about Anti-Catholicism.
If you do any further research I am sure you will find plenty of articles defining this anti-catholicism.

So, where do we come off with this thread about Catholics disliking Anglicanism? It’s all beyond me.

Maybe some of the Protestants out there would like to respond.

It is good that there is something for everyone somewhere within Christianity 😉

Spoken like a true Protestant, dining at the cafeteria table of Christianity.

Thanks, I am orthodox Catholic.

That reassures me that I am not bigotted or prejudiced, but tolerant and accepting of diversity 👍

Sure, I’ll respond. Ronnok is correct. It is very prevalent where I live. One outburst of it was when we had 7 Catholics attend our Seder supper during Lent this year and all 7 were ridiculed and chastised by their priest for it. You must either live in Antarctica or have your head in the sand (or snow) to not see it.

Catholics are not allowed to participate in anything that makes a mockery of Judaism - that’s why they would have been chastised for attending a Seder supper.

Does that mean you are accepting of such things as homosexuality, divorce, abortion, same sex unions?

peace

I don’t care if it is or not. You still do it.
Is there anything in the Catechism or any magisterial documents saying Catholics are allowed to do such things? You can claim all you want, but it’s pure ignorance to blame someone, who has never even met you in person, that they despise you. Pretty harsh accusations if you ask me.

You can’t judge a religion by the actions of a few people. It’s just silly.🤷
