I got a better idea check the bible?
What does the bible say about friday lent?
First of all there’s no such thing as Friday Lent. Lent is a period of 40 days, including some Fridays obviously. Different thing.

The Bible says ‘WHEN you fast’, not if, so no question fasting is mandatory. It also says ‘when the bridegroom (being Christ) is taken away (being on a Friday), then his followers will mourn and fast’. So it even tells us when 🙂

It also says Christ fasted forty days in the desert, which IS the first Lent. I bet you celebrate Christmas and Easter though neither of THOSE words are in the Bible. Same applies for observing Lent.

We cannot do any less if we are to be imitators of Him as St Paul says we must be. So 40 days it is.

just wanted to point out that this thread arrived at its happy conclusion with post #4.

😃

actually christmas and easter don’t have anything to do with church or my religion. They are man made holidays. just like lent as you said

“When you fast” means it’s mandatory… interesting he didn’t say they had to do it, he said that they would do it, so he gave them instructions. didn’t when or how long though

Fasting is great for the mind and soul, don’t get me wrong. It’s just not mandated. A church should never order anyone to abstain from meat. Atleast Christ church dosen’t, you guys can if you want to. If it’s someones personal decision to fast, great.

Canada requires abstinence?
We can substitute other penances if we desire, but we are strongly encouraged to abstain from meat on all Fridays of the year.
What a headache - especially for travellers. The easiest thing is just to abstain on Fridays no matter where you are, eh?
That’s what I would do. After all, Jesus gave up the flesh of HIs own body on a Friday - the least I can do in His honour is give up a bit of steak or hamburger, and join any cravings I might experience to His suffering on the Cross, while counting my blessings. 🙂

Kind of like when a Mom says, “When you clean up your room, don’t forget to put your dirty clothes in the laundry.” And the kid says, “Oh, yeah. I was going to clean my room, wasn’t I?” :o

Do you know anything at all about the history of the Church? Because it seems to me that I remember reading about seven year penances in the early Church - I mean forget Friday abstinence from meat; these guys were on bread and water for years at a time. Also, what about that guy, St. Simeon Stylite, who sat up on top of a pole, preaching the Gospel non-stop, for how long, as penance for his sins?

I think the reason the Church started mandating Friday penances was so that people wouldn’t inadvertently kill themselves - it was a reduction; not an imposition.

The incarnation and birth, death and resurrection of Christ have nothing to do with your Church or religion? That’s what Christmas and Easter are. And if they have nothing to do with you then you are a millimetre away from not being Christian at all.

It figures though, that you’d have your priorities so wrong that you don’t bother to give proper acknowledgement to the two most important events in the history of humanity. That you would do more in terms of celebrating your own birth than His.

Want to bet that he doesn’t celebrate his own birth, or any other event? Celebrations are anti-Christian. Like the wedding at Cana (although maybe that’s not in his bible). 🤷

What a dour, grey life that must be! 😦

Oh you may not have a party, Mr F, but I bet you acknowledge that the day on which you came into the world is NOT just like any other day. If you have children of your own you can’t help but remember the day THEY were born. Yet you’re not willing to say the same about the day on which Jesus came into the world.

And I bet you want a memorial service of some kind, or at least a decent burial or cremation, when you die - and would probably be gratified if your loved ones remembered you specially each year on the anniversary of your death. Which is more acknowledgement than you’re willing to pay to the anniversary of Christ’s death 😦

The only groups I can think of that would dread or ban celebrating Jesus Christs birth and His glorious Passion and ressurection would be non trinitarian.

Where does the bible restrict these celebrations?

He certainly said when - he said ‘when the Bridegroom is taken away’ - that was on a Friday, pal.

And through St Paul (unless you don’t believe Paul had the authority of the Holy Spirit to teach in Christ’s name) Christ DID say how long - ‘be imitators of me as I am an imitator of Christ’. That means we do what He did, for as long as He did it (as far as possible at least).

And we all know He fasted for forty days. So there’s Him giving us instructions for the forty days right there. It’s all entirely scriptural. 🤷

Actually, Plymouth Brethren and Campbellites also don’t celebrate Christmas or Easter - or their own birthdays, or anything else.

I have never been to a Brethren or Campbellite funeral, so I have no idea how that plays out - they do have them, but they don’t seem to publicize them; it seems as if they are private gatherings.

I’m pretty sure they don’t remember the dead on their anniversaries, though - once they’re gone, it’s like they never existed.

So the day on which a person enters into life eternal in Christ (one hopes) is a day to be ignored or to be hidden away from? How sad. And what a total lack of understanding of Christ’s conquering of death.

And when I say ‘acknowledge’ or ‘remember’ I don’t even mean formal acknowledgement or anything - I simply mean one can’t help, when the date rolls around each year on which one’s child was born or one’s loved one died, thinking especially of them.

Hmm. Thanks jmcrae, I did not know that. Well, still the pool is rather small in any event. It is only a matter of time before we see more that will reveal what it is our new friend actually adhears to.

I suggest the book of Romans would be a good place to focus on. Namely Chapter 14, especially verse 5 and well, the whole thing is very good reading on the subject of special days.

🙂

Why anyone would object to the Church teaching us to follow Christ as he did, in fasting is bizzare. The Church is teaching us to be like Christ, and it would be a false Church if this was merely “optional” or up to the conscience.
Jesus spoke with authority- and you would expect- His Church to as well.

You’d need to check with the UK Bishop’s Conference to find out what the norm is for Fridays outside of Lent.

.
Aren’t those the same ‘guys’ who said The Bible had errors in it back in 2006?? I still haven’t “forgiven” them that!

The “Fish and Chips” shops have florished as a business because of Catholicism!! They used to make a ‘killing’ every Friday! I believe they are the fore-runners of Takeaways or “Eateries” as we know them.

“No meat Fridays” is confined to Lent as a MUST for Catholics the world over, but open throughout the year. (Execptions are Ash Wednesday etc.)

I feel certain that you’re thinking of the Anglican Bishops’ Conference - not our guys. 😉

Abundantly clear huh. lol The “Catholic church” cannot be found anywhere in the entire Bible. Not once, including Matthew 16:18-19. What your reading about is the Church of Christ my friend. It started in Acts 2:38-47. The More you read about it, the more you’ll realize how different it is in comparison to the Catholic Church. As it was said earlier the church is the Body of Christ.
If the Catholic Church was the church being mentioned in Matthew, we would’ve read about going to confession with priest
Mt 9:1-8 says that Jesus was given the authority to forgive sins. Later in that passage, the multitudes marveled at such power given unto “Men”. Notice that the power was given to men not to a man.

John 20:21-23 states, “As the Father has sent me even though I send you.” How was Jesus sent by the father? He was sent with the authority to forgive sins as discussed in Mt 9:1-8. If that is true, then he must be sending the same authority to forgive sins that he was given. The scriptures verify this through the following verse, “And when He had said this, he breathed on them, and said to them receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven; if you retain the sins of any they are retained” (Jn 20:22-23).

How can men forgive sins if no one is confessing to them? And how can they forgive or retain if no one is confessing to them?
we would have read about cardinals, and nuns,
We do read about Priest and Bishops

If your Church was the Church in the bible we would read that there are no Priest and Bishops:D
we would have read about praying to Mary
“Pray” is just the old english word for “ask.” In legal papers you still see it used: “Plaintiff prays the court for the following relief …” That’s all we do with reference to saints – we pray (ask) them to pray for us to God. Same as we do with living saints here on earth — we ask them to pray for us.

William Shakespeare said this in one of his plays. “ I PRAY thee cease thy counsel, which falls into mine ears as profitless as water in a sieve.”

(Eph 2:19) “So then you are no longer STRANGERS and sojourners, but you are FELLOW-CITIZENS WITH THE SAINTS, and the HOUSE HOLD OF GOD.” And what do we do with the citizen here on earth? We ask for their prayers and this is the same for the body of Christ in Heaven.

(Rev. 8:3-4) “The smoke of the incense along with the prayers of the holy ones went up before God from the hand of the angel.” Obviously they pray for us in heaven and present our prayers to the Lord.

(Tobit 12:12) “I can now tell you that when you, Tobit, and Sarah prayed, it was I who presented and read the record of your prayer before the glory of the Lord.” We have an angel presenting a prayer to God!!! Just as we present prayer for one another here on earth. It has always been a Christian tradition that they still do this in heaven.
we would have read about babies being baptized,
If your Church was in the bible we would read about baptism being symbolic.
we would have read about Peter being called a pope,
Pope is Italian for father. please tell me you dont have a problem with him being called father. I dont see that being wrong in scripture do you?

after all we do know Peter is always listed first amongst the aposltes. Peter is always named first. Guess who is always named last, Judas. This is a measure of importance. Examples are (Mt 10:2-5; Mk 3:16-19; Lk 6:14-17; and Acts 1:13)

Also many times when the scriptures list the Apostles without listing all of them, it says “Peter and the rest of the Apostles” or “Peter and his companions”. Examples are (Lk 9: 32) “Peter and his companions had been overcome by sleep…;” also (Mk 16:7; Acts 2:37)

you my friend need to re-read scripture. PETER AND HIS COMPANIONS
we may have read about thousands of little alter boys being raped by priest,
easy now lets keep this charitable you dont want to get the boot before you can plant some seeds do ya? After all that aint a good way going about saving us Catholics.

I hope you stay around for a while but please becareful on what you say your always welcome to challenge us catholics but keep it charitable.

but what is Ironic is this as well is scriptural. The Church my friend has wolves in sheep clouthing. Was this not Jesus own words?

Name me one Protestant denomination that hasn’t had its share of murderers, liars, cheats, homosexuals, fornicators, blasphemers, etc.? Martin Luther helped bring about the slaughter of tens of thousands of German peasants. So, I guess you can’t go by anything he says, right? If you can’t believe anything that a sinner says, then I guess you can’t believe anything, can you, because you only have sinners as your teachers?

The Church has to be guided by God in matters of faith and morals, precisely because of the sinful nature of man. Aren’t you a sinner? If you are, why should I listen to anything you have to say?

Have you ever read Matthew 23? What does Jesus call the scribes and Pharisees? Liars. Blind guides. White washed tombs. Hypocrites. So, we shouldn’t do what they say, right? I know you’re nodding your head in agreement here, but, once again, you’re wrong.

What does Jesus say to His disciples and the crowds in Matthew 23:1-3? The scribes and Pharisees sit on the seat of Moses, therefore “do whatever they tell you.” I find that pretty interesting, don’t you,? Jesus tells the crowds, and even His disciples to do whatever the scribes and Pharisees say, because they sit on the seat of Moses…in other words, they hold a position of religious authority, and, even though they are some of the worst sinners, Jesus tells the crowds and His own disciples to do whatever they say to do.
In Matthew 16:18 “Jesus said that upon this rock I will build my church and the gates of hell will not prevail against it.”
“Jesus said to him in reply, blessed are you Simon son of Jonah. For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you but my heavenly Father

18 And so I say to you, you are Peter, and upon this rock I will build my Church, and the gates of the nether world will not prevail against it. 19 I will give you the keys to the kingdom of Heaven. What ever you bind on earth will be bound in Heaven; and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in Heaven.”

Now lets compare that to (Isaiah 22:21-22) “I will cloth him with your robe, and gird him with your sash, and give to him your authority, He shall be a Father to the inhabitants of Jerusalem, and to the house of Judah. I will place the KEY of the House of David on his shoulder; when he opens, no one shall shut, when he shuts no one shall open.

Jesus is obviously referring to this old testament passage whom authority is being passed on by passing on the keys, Keys are a symbol of authority. People should really study into this passage. It means exactly how Catholics have always interpreted this passage there is no way around it. We will look into this passage again after some more scripture.

(Mt 16:13-20) start with verse 17: “Jesus said to him in reply, blessed are you Simon son of Jonah.

Peter’s name was changed by Jesus from Simon to Peter who happens to mean ROCK. And when ever there is a name change in the bible it is a big deal there is always a good reason behind name changes. I will get into the Greek meaning of rock after some more verses.

If you want to respond start a link and answer these questions lets not derail this thread anymore than we already have. I just felt we could not leave your comments un answered.

again start a thread. If you have bible truth bring it on. but I would say your theology is wrong and the Chruch fathers would have to agree with the Church not your fallible interpritation.
