I have some few questions about the catholic religion. I am not catholic, but have studied the catholic religion and I have many friends that are catholic. So I have some questions please answer.
Q1.Why do you bow down to Mary?
Is there anything in the Bible that says to recognize Mary, adore Mary, or talk to Mary?
It clearly says in Exodus 20:4 through 5
4Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth.

5Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for I the LORD thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me;
Q2.whats with the Rosary?
is there anything in the Bible about praying a Rosary, counting beads, etc.
Q3.calling the Priest father?
It also says clearly in the bible in Matthew 23:9 “And call no man your father upon the earth: for one is your Father, which is in heaven.”
That is all my questions. I used the KJV bible for these verses.

Your questions (“Where in the Bible…”) seem to imply something non-biblical–that all beliefs must be found in the Bible. Where does it say that?

Now, we Catholics believe that the Church (which the Bible calls “The pillar and foundation of truth”) speaks the Word of God just as surely as the Bible does.

So, if the Church says to honor Mary (we do NOT worship her; that’s for God alone), then we should honor Mary.

Mary was the first to say “yes” to Jesus, the first in faith, the first Tabernacle. Just as surely as I can ask my own mother (or your mother, for that matter) to pray for me, I can ask Mary, who’s very close to Jesus.

The Bible also says call no one “teacher.” Do you call anyone teacher, or your own dad “Father?” How many times does Paul refer to himself as a father to the Gentiles? How many times is Abraham called “Father Abraham.”
Don’t be too literal; Scripture means for us to understand that anyone who is a Father to us in the Faith, derives such authority from Our Father.
Peace.
John

I’ll bet you thought you had things to say we’ve not already dealt with a thousand times.

But I have a few questions for you!

Where in the Bible does it say to use computers?

Where in the Bible does it say to have invitation hymns, altar calls, and revivals?

Where in the Bible does it say to use hymnals?

Where in the Bible does it say that you can be saved by simply saying a “sinner’s prayer”?

Where in the Bible is the text of this prayer?

Mary’s Song of Praise

"And Mary said,
‘My soul magnifies the Lord,
and my spirit rejoices in God
my Saviour,
for he has looked with favour on
the lowliness of his servant.
Surely, from now on all
generations will call
me blessed;
for the Mighty One has done
great things for me,
and holy is his name.
His mercy is for those who fear
him
from generation to generation.
He has shown strength with
his arm;
he has scattered the proud in
the thoughts of their hearts.
He has brought down the
powerful from their thrones,
and lifted the lowly;
he has filled the hungry with
good things,
and sent the rich away empty.
He has helped his servant Israel,
in remembrance of his mercy,
according to the promise he
made to our ancestors,
to Abraham and to his
descendants for ever.’ "
Luck 1:46-55

Look at it, “Surely, from now on all generations will call me blessed; for the Mighty One has done great things for me,…”
I do not know what you think about it; but I know that Mary is Holy Mother and most blessed.

Hi!
I will first start with the rosary. I am going to assume that you are not actually familiar with the rosary itself.
To put it very simply, we use the rosary to pray the gospels, everyday. You and I know, that it is very difficult to read and pray an entire gospel every day. Well, the rosary helps us to reflect and meditate on the highlights of Jesus’ life, from the Annunciation of the Angel Gabriel to the Blessed Virgin, to His Incarnation, to His Public ministry to His Passion, Death, Resurrection and Ascension. If you reflect on the entire rosary, every day, (20 decades) you will have reflected and prayed upon the entire life of Jesus, every day. And, this is key, we meditate on the life of Jesus, through the eyes of the one who knows Him best, His mother.
So in the daily rosary, we ask His Mother to help us to get to know, love and serve Her Son with more love and devotion than we did the day before.

One key to having a true Catholic understanding of Mary is in John 2:5. “Do whatever He tells you.” That is what she always tell us to do. That is what she always does. We go to her and ask her for her help, she turns to Jesus and offers her prayers to Him united with our prayers.

So please understand that Catholics do not worship Mary! We do not idolize Mary. We honor her in the spirit of her own words. Luke 1:48 “All generations will call me blessed.” And we always ask Jesus to help us to love her in the same way that He does. Not any more…but certainly not any less!

God Bless!
To Jesus, through Mary

Read Where We Got the Bible: Our Debt to the Catholic Church or do a simple search on CA and you’ll find plenty of information–that is if you are really asking. I always try to assume the best when people ask such questions in the manner you have, but I have to admit sometimes it’s hard. Thank you for giving me a reason to exercise Christian patience, once again. 😉

The commandments tell us to “honor thy father and mother”, which Jesus did. We try to be Christ-like and imitate Him by honoring His mother also. God forbids the making of images for the purpose of worshiping them. But there are also verses in Scripture where God demanded that angel statues be made for His temple (sorry-I don’t know the verse off the top of my head).

I raised my hand and, holding her statue, wished to press it to my lips;
I should be happy, could I look at her statue, even from a distance; but I know she is with Christ, and we will see Christ coming on the clouds of heaven.

These questions belong in the apologetics sub forum. Not in the relative ease of the spirituality of the faithful. There you will get the usual, who put the bible together, where in the bible is the word Trinity, blah blah blah. But if you are looking into how to pray the rosary or divine mercy chaplet, you came to the right place. Tim

Dear “BibleReader”. Welcome to CAF.

Your questions have been asked many times… by other non-Catholics. I will try to answer them, as best and as respectfully as I can.

You asked: “Why do you bow down to Mary?”.

Answer: This question, is one of the oldest misunderstandings that non-Catholic Christians have about Catholic Christians.

We do not “bow down to Mary”. We do not worship or adore Mary. And we do not sacrifice to Mary. We HONOR and LOVE Mary, as the Mother of Our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Do you not believe that Jesus “honored and loved” His own Mother? Catholics imitate Our Lord, in honoring His Mother. We love her, because He loves her.

Sacred Scripture tells us:

“When Jesus saw His Mother and the disciple whom He loved, He said to His Mother, “Woman, behold your son.” Then to the disciple, “Behold, your Mother.” And from that hour the disciple took her into his home.” (John 19:26-27)

Catholics believe, at this moment… that Our Lord gave His Mother to all of us. It is His Will… then, that we honor and love her.

And we seek her intercession… because she interceded for the Bride and Groom… at the Wedding of Cana; because they had no wine. (John 2:1-11). Through these passages, we learn that Our Lady intercedes for us… and that she ALWAYS points the way to Jesus… “Do whatever He tells you.”

Your next concern… seems to be over the use of statues, and icons.

“Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth”

If you take this “literally”… then I have news for you. The entire American populace… is guilty. Why? Because we “honor” the Statue of Liberty. Not to mention the images of all the past Presidents. The Lincoln Memorial comes to mind. Oh, and you’d better also go ahead and burn all of your family photos; Get rid of any trophies in the house. Action figures and dolls will all have to go… as well.

Catholics do not “make graven images”. Statues are simply reminders. Look at it this way. Catholics use statues, in the same way you might use a family photo album. There were no camera’s during the time Jesus lived on earth. So… we use statues of Jesus, Mary and saints… to help us think about them, better.

Keep in mind… this passage. .where Almighty God commanded Moses to make an image:

“… and the Lord said to Moses, “Make a seraph and mount it on a pole, and if anyone who has been bitten looks at it, he will recover.” (Numbers 21:8)

When God commanded that men make no graven images… He meant, no graven images to WORSHIP. Catholics do not worship graven images. They are simply reminders.

Next… the Rosary…

The Rosary is simply a Meditative Prayer… based on the lives of Jesus and Mary. We pray the “Our Father”… “Hail Mary” and the “Glory Be”… while meditating on events in the lives of Our Lord and His Holy Mother. We use the beads to keep track of the number of prayers, we’ve said.

The Lord Himself, taught us how to pray the “Our Father”. (Matthew 6:9-13; Luke 11:2-4). And the prayer known as the “Hail Mary” is also found in Scripture. (Luke 1:28, and Luke 1:42). The “Glory Be” is simply a prayer, praising God.

And your last question, “call no man father”…

The Ten Commandments say:

“Honor your father and your mother.” (Deuteronomy 5:16)

And again, St. Paul tells us:

“Children, obey your parents {in the Lord}, for this is right. “Honor your father and your mother.” (Ephesians 6:2)

If you take “call no man father” literally… NONE of us… could call our own dads… “father”. We could also NOT say “Papa”… “Dad”… “Daddy”… or “Grandfather”. I don’t know about you… but my dad wouldn’t have been happy… had I called him by his first name!

Hope these answers are helpful. God bless.

Ill try to answer all questions…
bowing to mary is not worship of her as a Goddess. The angel Gabriel in the Hail of Mary in Luke 1:28 has been interpreted that the Angel bowed to Mary. For when Mary looked at him in verse 29 she became afraid at the greeting of the angel to her… This is why we painting of the Annunciation with the angel bowing at Mary… Bowing not all the time means worship… is somethings honoring of a person…

In psalms 45 verse 17 or 18, God said to the Queen of the Messiah king that he is going to make all generations praise her forever. praise her means honor… In the new testament mary said all generations will call her blessed … Also take note the the Queen’s of the old testament davidic kings was not the bride but the mother of the king… Mary is mother of Jesus… Mary’s canticle lines up with psalm 45 statement.Psa 45:17 I will cause your name to be celebrated in all generations; therefore the peoples will praise you for ever and ever. Luk 1:48 for he has regarded the low estate of his handmaiden. For behold, henceforth all generations will call me blessed;

Elizabeth statement in luke 1:42 called Mary blessed the word her is used for both Jesus and Mary in this verse and it can be translated as praise.G2127 eulogeō
to speak well of, that is, (religiously) to bless (thank or invoke a benediction upon, prosper): - bless, praise.

Not all statues are idolatry… we have them on the ark of the covenant and in the temple of solomon…

Paul and other apostle call themselfs father of christian by christ jesus :1Co 4:15 For though you have countless guides in Christ, you do not have many fathers. For I became your father in Christ Jesus through the gospel.

Your questions (“Where in the Bible…”) seem to imply something non-biblical–that all beliefs must be found in the Bible. Where does it say that?

Why should we honor Mary?
