Mary’s not a “spirit”. She’s Mary, the Mother of God and Queen of Heaven, who was assumed bodily into Heaven. As someone said above, the only “spirit” to whom we pray is the Holy Spirit which is God in the third person of the Trinity.
I could not care less if devotion to Mary seems “weird” to anyone. I think they are weird for not understanding simple devotion to our wonderful Blessed Mother who is always trying to help us.
I pray to God (as God the Father, Jesus, and Holy Spirit)
I ask Mary and lots of saints to help me and pray for me.
I ask Mary to give me special graces.
I’m generally not looking for “answers”, this is not a seance. Occasionally I will get something specific I prayed for or get some kind of sign or response back, but much of my prayer is done for spiritual benefit and support, not for “getting” something concrete right now.
