Do Catholics typically get involved with Interfaith Volunteering?

Hi, my name is Mike and I am Catholic, but I often like to learn about different religions. In particular, I like to talk to individuals and learn about their beliefs. Because of my interests, I like to get involved in various kinds of Interfaith activities and learn about all kinds of people.

I was wondering if Catholic’s usually get involved in Interfaith work such a volunteering and if the Catholic Church at large has any substantial movements to do so or funds any Interfaith projects.

Also, I would be interested in hearing what individual Catholics think about Interfaith work.

Thank you for your time. 🙂
I have tried, but it didn’t work out since many faith-based charities in my city require one to sign a Protestant statement of faith in order to be approved, and I will not do that.

You can always do St. Vincent de Paul. They help people and do not turn away people of another faith fro assistance if they have the means.

I receive a monthly interfaith service newsletter, and it’s incredible to see what the various faiths are doing. Sometimes we get good ideas form their projects! Often, they will spotlight one of ours.

Awesome! Thank you everyone.

The only thing I’m now wondering is … what about Islam, Hinduism, and other non-Christian religions. I haven’t heard much from you about interfaith activities or volunteering involving non-Christian religions. Have you ever participated in any? Are they common?

🙂

It can be very difficult to have an interfaith activity with those religions as it can put Catholics in a morally compromised situation. I did attend a Jewish friend’s Bar Mitzvah once… I had a work friend who practiced Islam, but we never discussed it much…other than where she got some of her beautiful scarves used for head coverings as I have contemplated covering at Mass before.

When I attended Catholic services, I remember our soup kitchen was interfaith. Denominations were assigned different days to run the kitchen and would in turn get their members to staff the requirement. The soup kitchen was always located in our parish facility though, due to location and consistency. I think service work is often shared in such a manner, so not really an opportunity for interfaith dialogue

If people were serving side by side, I see fellowshiping but don’t imagine a deeper discussion of the faith differences. Most members would focus on the service and avoid creating controversy.

Oh, ok. What sort of “morally compromised situation”?
An interfaith prayer service with non-Christian denominations is difficult at best because of differences of belief being so great in number.
