I came back to the Catholic Church last year after many years away. I now have three boys who were all baptized in August and the older two are in CCD, the youngest is only 4. My husband, also a returning Catholic, and I have “received the ashes” in the past. Do children receive ashes? Do they participate in Lent?

Children may receive ashes if they wish and if their parents consider it appropriate. As for Lent, the law of abstinence from meat starts at age 14, and the law of fast starts at age 18. Children may practice abstinence earlier than 14, with their parents’ approval and supervision, but should not fast. They may also be encouraged to make a personal Lenten sacrifice, such as giving up candy during Lent.
