Let me preface this question by saying that I fully support the Church’s teaching on the evil of artificial contraception. My question and concern is this: I was listening to a Catholic Answers Live program with guest Victor Claveau and he stated that condoms do not protect against HIV because of microscopic holes in the condoms themselves. He claimed that the virus is able to penetrate those tiny holes and cause HIV. However, the secular websites all say that latex and polyurethane condoms are an effective seal against the HIV virus penetrating it as long as the condom itself hasn’t been exposed to the sun or lubricated with oil. One site said that lambskin condoms do not protect against the virus because they are porous enough to permit entry of the virus. Mr. Claveau seemed to be adamant about the ineffectiveness of all condoms and he said that the secular’s claim of their effectiveness is a myth. What is the truth about condom use and it’s effectiveness in preventing the HIV virus?

I remember going to a “just say no” presentation when I was in grade school (around 20 yrs ago so take this as you want) that said the holes allowed by law are like throwing a tennis ball (HIV virus) through a hula-hoop. 🤷

I wouldn’t have sex with a man with HIV if he wore ten condoms. Back in the day when I was a protestant and not wanting more children, my hubby and I used condoms. There were instances when it slipped off, and when it broke.

As with anything manmade, things don’t always work as they are supposed to.

Sounds like Mr. Claveau is a very smart man. Listen to him…teachccd 🙂

This Catholic website talks about it, and sites all their sources, so it’s pretty reliable.
Yes, it’s a great source and I agree and am very encouraged by what it says but it doesn’t specifically answer my original question which is: Does a latex or polyurethane condom protect against the HIV virus from coming through microscopic pores or holes in the condom? The secularist says “yes” provided the condom isn’t too old, or overexposed to the sun or certain lubricants but Mr. Claveau seems to be suggesting that the answer is “no” under all regardless of the qualifications. I don’t know if he’s playing with the facts a little bit because if he is, it could undermine the Church’s credibility.

Condoms are not 100% against anything whether its pregancy or disease.

I would have to say “no, they are not effective” in preventing the spread of HIV. I think that they provide a false sense of security. The CDC says that condoms are effective…but that they do fail.

Considering that not everything is known about how AIDS/HIV is transmitted…its almost impossible to say what does or does not prevent the spread.

I worked in the field of Ophthalmology for quite a few years, and Ophthalmologists have long been concerned with the possible transmission of the virus through the use of the contact tonometer prism. This prism is used on a device that measures the interocular pressure of the eye. It is made of very specialized plastic…and can only be sterilized by a few substances… and even they could cause the destruction of the prism.

Whats my point? That it isn’t just genital contact, bare skin to bare skin that transmits the virus…if ocular fluids (tears) can transmit it…what about saliva? Or any other body fluid? The CDC admits that HIV has been found in tears and saliva…though they seem to doubt the efficacy of the viral transmission by these methods… cdc.gov/Hiv/resources/qa/qa37.htm But simple logic allows clarity… if the virus is present and alive, then it can be transmitted. Its a virus.

While I am not a prude…I do have to say that having sexual relations outside of marriage with a spouse who is disease free is much like playing russian roulette with only one cylinder empty.

In practical terms, using condoms to prevent HIV is like being asked to wear a bullet proof vest and stand in front of machine gun fire every day - with the assurance that the vest has been tested to withstand live bullets and not to listen to those who don’t stand in front of machine gun fire.

speaker from the local university who makes this presentation in area public schools, and quoting stats from mainstream secular culture of death science, warns kids condoms are not effective against HIV and HPV, and range from marginally effective to zero as contraceptives (when used by teens). I have heard the presentation and reviewed the literature for parents several times, and the message remains constant.

The CDC calls condoms “highly effective” in protecting from HIV since they are “essentially impenetrable barriers.” The problem is when they are used improperly or used past their expiration date, which, sadly, happens often.
