Yes, permanent deacons very often do have other jobs. But I recommend that you focus on discerning your conversion right now and not worry about a vocation within the Church at this time. Although requirements vary from diocese to diocese, I suspect many vocations directors would tell you that new converts should concentrate on living the Catholic life for at least several years first before discerning a call to ordination or the religious life.
