Do Deacons preach?

Obviously the task of preaching is normally left to the priest/bishop but is it possible that deacons also preach? If so when? where do they preach?

Just curious… oh and if it is not much of bother pray for me … Ive started to become interested in the diaconate

Yes, deacons preach. Diaconate is an order so deacons members of the clergy. They can give the homily at Mass.

Basically, deacons can do everything a priest does except offer the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass, administer the sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick, and absolve sins in confession. Deacons can baptize and witness at marriages.

In our diocese, it is common for the parish’s deacon (if they have one) to preach at all the Masses one weekend a month. This gives him experience, and the pastor a “break” from doing a homily. Some deacons around here are *much *better at preaching than their pastors – they take it more seriously, instead of pulling that weekend’s homily out of the file from 3 years ago – or pulling it off the Internet.
 
I have 5 personal friends that are deacons. They all preach pretty frequently at Mass. They also frequently do Baptisms and witness marriages. One of them performed the marriage ceremony for his daughter, -it was very special and beautiful. Deacons can be a big help to priests who have a heavy work-load.

Most in our diocese do the one month thing. Our deacon does one mass a weekend and rotates, rather than all on one weekend. This way he covers every week in all three cycles-great education for him.
