Probably has come up somewhere before but I couldn’t find it with a quick search. Do the EO teach that the Eucharist becomes Christ and the substance is no longer bread and wine?

The EO teach the Real Presence of Christ in the Holy Eucharist but they do not attempt to explain how it happens–it is a glorious Mystery. They do not use scholastic philosophical words such as “Transubstantiation” in an attempt to define this great Mystery.

Some Orthodox have adopted the Aristotelian distinction between substance and accidents in an attempt to the MANNER of the Change, and even the term “transubstantiation” (METAOUSIOSIS in Greek).

Most Orthodox, however, are content to use the liturgical word “change”, as used in the Epiclesis.

Those receiving the Eucharistic gifts do NOT receive bread or wine, but the Body and Blood of Christ–either to their damnation or salvation.

Thanks! Is there any sort of Church doc to this effect I could look at?

I’m not aware of any Church that attempts to explain how it “happens”. It is a mystery!

**The Liturgies themselves, the Offices of Preparation and Thanksgiving for Communion, maybe the Catechism of St. Peter Mogila (Mohila).

Don’t forget, Orthodox have not had an Ecumenical Council since the 7th.

You could also try Protopresbyter Michael Pomazanky’s ORTHODOX DOGMATIC THEOLOGY on this site:**

Thanks again, I found this under Orthodox Dogmatic Theology:
The Eucharist (literally “thanksgiving”) is the Mystery in which the bread and wine of offering are changed by the Holy Spirit into the true Body and true Blood of our Lord Jesus Christ…
