I’m a former Protestant. I have to say that Catholics are more open about their struggle with sin. Heck, we have a whole sacrament devoted to it. Catholics believe that even after original sin is wiped out, we still struggle with concupiscence.
On the other hand, Protestant’s believe they’re saved by faith alone, and when you question them on how works fit into the equation, they’ll often say that you’re saved by faith, and then your good works follow necessarily AFTER you have faith… that is, the good works don’t save you, but after you’re saved, good works will inevitably follow.
So if you’re struggling with serious sin after you’ve been “saved”… well… guess what? You may not be saved at all!
Here’s a very popular evangelical preacher basically saying the same thing. Notice particularly his personal interpretation at 1:30-1:40. Wonder why a Protestant wouldn’t be open about a long term struggle with concupiscence? It’s right there.

Your son may be seeing things through rose colored glasses. Sorry, but all the evidence-- even from Protestants themselves-- shows that they struggle with pornography and sexual sin, and there’s even evidence (from conservative Protestants) that they have HIGHER rates of sex abuse than Catholic clergy!
This is from Evangelical/Protestant sources:
“Seventy percent of American men ages 18–34 view Internet pornography once a month. . . Don’t assume that porn isn’t a problem in the church. One evangelical leader was skeptical of survey findings that said 50 percent of Christian men have looked at porn recently. So he surveyed his own congregation. He found that 60 percent had done so within the past year, and 25 percent within the past 30 days. Other surveys reveal that one in three visitors to adult websites are women.”

The following study was done by an Evangelical Christian group:
"The statistics for Christian men between 18 and 30 years old are particularly striking:
77 percent look at pornography at least monthly.
36 percent view pornography on a daily basis.
32 percent admit being addicted to pornography (and another 12 percent think they may be).
The statistics for middle-aged Christian men (ages 31 to 49) are no less disturbing:
77 percent looked at pornography while at work in the past three months.
64 percent view pornography at least monthly.
18 percent admit being addicted to pornography (and another 8 percent think they may be)."

Also, numerous studies have found that sex abuse is higher among Protestant congregations (and btw, sex abuse is actually highest among secular school teachers/workers-- even higher than both Protestant and Catholic clergy).

But here’s a conservative Protestant source discussing sex abuse being worse among Protestants than Catholics:
“Amazing words from one of Billy Graham’s grandsons, a Liberty University law professor who investigates sexual abuse among Evangelicals . . . While comparing evangelicals to Catholics on abuse response, ”I think we are worse,” he said at the Religion Newswriters Association conference, saying too many evangelicals had “sacrificed the souls” of young victims. / / Protestants can be very arrogant when pointing to Catholics,” said Tchividjian, a grandson of evangelist Billy Graham and executive director of Godly Response to Abuse in the Christian Environment (GRACE), which has investigated sex abuse allegations.”

Here’s a secular scientific source:
“According to the best available data (which is pretty good mostly coming from a comprehensive report by the John Jay College of Criminal Justice in 2004 as well as several other studies), 4% of Catholic priests in the USA sexually victimized minors during the past half century. No evidence has been published at this time that states that this number is higher than clergy from other religious traditions. The 4% figure appears lower than school teachers during the same time frame and certainly less than offenders in the general population of men.”

“We don’t see the Catholic Church as a hotbed of this or a place that has a bigger problem than anyone else,” said Ernie Allen, president of the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children. “I can tell you without hesitation that we have seen cases in many religious settings, from traveling evangelists to mainstream ministers to rabbis and others.”

Lastly, if he has a problem with celibate priests, ask him where does he see Protestants fulfilling this scripture?
“Not all can accept this word, but only those to whom it is granted. Some are incapable of marriage because they were born so; some, because they were made so by others; some, because they have renounced marriage for the sake of the kingdom of God. Whoever can accept this ought to accept it” Matt. 19:11–12
Who are the Protestants that are renouncing marriage for the sake of the Kingdom? Can he give me a list of them?
