Do I have a Moral Obligation?

Hi.
I’m being in receipt of state benefits. However I do rent a room which is also an income. There is a rule saying that this must be reported. When I report it I will most surely loose some of my sum of state benefits. I’m not sure about the amount that I will loose but I can guess it may be even 230$ per month.
However the “Cesar” should have what is his. Even if his government is paying for thousands of abortions. So help me be a better Christian by telling me the right thing to do.

Thank you for telling us what it is you are dealing with also. In my heart of hearts I know we must always do the right thing. We then must trust in this:
For those unknown events that will follow doing the right thing, we must have trust in their outcome.

Tax evasion IS a crime and anyone with hard evidence of any crime should report it to the authorities.

God didn’t commission us to be busy bodies and tattle tales. (Tempting as that is to most “good church-going people.”) The better course might be for her to talk to the person who’s not paying this tax. If she can’t do that safely then she should just mind her own business (and pray).

I would encourage you to talk to a priest so that you can give more specific background info than you probably care to give here and receive more specific advice for your situation.

Interesting thought Boy Wonder and God does not commission us to assume one is a busy body or tattle tale. Since we are on a Catholic Forum and I am a Catholic the “good church-going people” as you stated take great time in prayer. I am grounded in my faith and I am not quick to react. I am very mindful in everyone’s personal freedoms as well as social ad civil justice for all.

If all of society took it upon themselves to mind their own business as you suggested what kind of society would we live in ? As for myself I am greatful and thankful for those citizens who dont mind their own business and step up to the plate. By doing so they could also be protecting you Boy Wonder. You may not even know it.

Once again, I do not believe you are under any moral obligation to denounce the tax evader to the local authorities. If it were a different sort of crime then there may be a duty. Sorry you don’t want to hear this. It’s simply my informed opinion. Feel free to thank me again and disregard what I say. You’re obviously eager to have someone thrown in jail.

Perhaps you should examine your own motives rather than those of the other person? (Personal malice? Envy? Hatred? Anger? Before taking any action against another, make sure these aren’t the factors which motivate you.)

Thank you again Boy Wonder for your imformed opinon. I value everyones imput. Unless I misread you opinion and misunderstand what you have stated even you are of the opinion that a tax evader if by their own actions could face jail? I didnt know that. I figured they would be put on notice to pay their tax within a resonable amount of time.

And the world keeps going round and round doesnt it. No one is accountable for someone elses actions. We all have free will. Free will to do what is right and what is wrong. Or free will to do nothing at all.
I’ll end my thread in thankfulness for those who speak up not out of hate or malice or envy but they did it because they knew they should.
